Low NT but blood results for Down’s are telling me medium risk

Hi everyone, I’m 39 and this is my first pregnancy after 4 attempts of medicated timed intercourse. I’m now 13 weeks and have just had a phone call from my obstetrician to say my Down’s syndrome blood test result has come back as a medium risk, 1 in 200 chance. At my scan last week the nuchal translucency was measuring at only 1.1mm which is good. I’m having another blood test tomorrow which will give me a yes/no answer for down’s and other chromosomal abnormalities and will be 99% accurate.

I’m wondering if anyone else had a similar test result and had a positive end result? Does my age automatically put me in a higher risk category with my blood results? For example, if I was 25 with the same blood results, would they not class it as medium risk?

Thank you in advance ❤️

We were told we had a 1/34 chance of Downs and age was a big component of this - it’s risk based on statistics rather than anything about your baby. I’m 37, will probably be 38 by the time the baby is born. And our NT was below the threshold for concern.

We were categorised as higher risk of Downs, so had an NIPT which confirmed no evidence of Downs. The results came back in less than a week so I hope yours do too, as it’s an uneasy wait.

Best of luck and try not to worry x

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Remember you have a 199/200 chance of it not being Downs. This is how I dealt with a risk like that when I was pregnant 30 years ago. Hope all goes well

I was 1/110 at 38 years old. Had the harmony test and all was fine and my lo born without any health issues. I had a high hcg level (I've since read can be more common when carrying a girl) and that plus my age made the risk higher.

I'm sure everything will be fine. It's still a worrying time though, I only relaxed once I had the nipt results.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. I was 1/212 at 36 years old. It was in the thousands with my first baby when I was 30. I was also slimmer then. They did not offer additional testing and NT result was comfortably in normal range but we had a scare late on at 36.5 weeks when something was picked up on a scan that can be a marker for downs. We decided not to do chromosomal testing as baby would've arrived before the test results but she's fine. The thing picked up on a scan was also determined as upper end of normal by fetal medicine the week after but it was a stressful time so I empathise with how you're probably feeling right now.

Age is such a big factor, even in the mid thirties it can easily bump you up to higher risk.
just think, you have three times more likelihood of chromosome abnormalities at 35 than at 30.

Nubnut · 12/05/2023 19:30

I’m sure it will be fine. Let us know.

it’s your age, that risk is low.,

I had my babies at ages 39 & 45, came back as high risk for downs at the 12 week screening in both pregnancies, had the NIPT done both times, results low risk & both babies born with no abnormalities. I think most of the "risk" is based on age (screening midwife agreed when I asked if this was so or it was in my case anyway as the nuchal fold & hormone whatever it is was high but still within normal on my test results). It's based on statistics its not necessarily personal to you so to speak (hence further testing). Congratulations and good luck, but I'm sure your baby is fine x

I had an amniocentesis which was the most accurate for me. It came back positive for T21.
