Would you get another scan or wait it out?

Hi ladies, I’ve had on and off brown/pink discharge for over a week now and had a doctors appointment yesterday. I asked them if they could listen for baby’s heartbeat to reassure me but they said at 15 weeks they may not be able to find it. The doctor tried for about a minute with no luck which left me feeling anxious. She said everything was probably fine and to wait until my 20 week scan. I’ve already had a few scans (6) due to previous ectopic and other red blood etc but haven’t had one since 12 week NHS scan. Debating whether to get a private window to the womb scan or just wait it out 😬
Thank you 💕

I think if it's going to make you really anxious for the next month or so, then get a private reassurance scan. Just be reminded that it is just for that, reassurance.

Thank you, Gem. I’m just so conflicted at the minute between wanting to have faith and trust the process and needed that extra bit of reassurance.

I would definitely get the private scan - you'll drive yourself crazy with worry otherwise x

CornishGem1975 · 04/05/2023 10:36

An extra scan will do no harm, if it will make you feel better and you can afford it, then do it. As @vix_85 says, you'll drive yourself crazy for the next 5 weeks otherwise.

Aw I feel for you OP as I was so anxious throughout pregnancy. Definitely get one just to put your mind at ease and make time pass faster while you wait for the 20 week one. It’ll be worth every penny for peace of mind. I used to only feel happy after a scan where everything was fine for a day or so then I’d be back worrying again about something else. But pregnancy is a special time and I wish I didn’t waste so much time constantly worrying. I keep hearing anecdotally that the mum’s mood/mental health is really important for the baby. All the best.

Thank you so much, did you have lots of scans at this stage too? X

Yes at pretty much half way between the 12 and 20 weeks mark. Just the one. I think a lot of people feel it’s a long wait between those two. Of course the wait after your 20 week scan until the end of pregnancy is even longer (if you don’t need any growth scans which is great) but I think the 20 week one is so in depth it offers more reassurance for longer perhaps.

I think if you’re the sort of person who feels reassured by scans rather than dreading them and worrying after them, go for it. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

Another vote to have a private scan, otherwise the next 5 weeks will be ridden with anxiety and panic. It's worth the money for the reassurance.

38andtrying · 04/05/2023 11:24

Absolutely private scan, ridiculous they won't scan you at nhs

Whattodonowadays · 04/05/2023 11:42

Yes go for a private scan, I wouldn’t be able to last another 5 weeks wondering. Definitely worth paying for to put your mind at ease. X

ShyLavender · 04/05/2023 13:11

Thanks ladies, have booked one for this afternoon. Really appreciate you all taking the time to comment 💖

At 15 weeks heartbeat is hard to find which is why they don’t tend to but when I went to EPU at 13 weeks with brown blood in discharge they did an internal scan so they could check my cervix at the same time and they checked heartbeat that way. I was only referred by GP because of previous miscarriages though but worth a call to GP to state your worries.

If not I would definitely go for a private scan for peace of mind. If you want to find out the sex and go from 16 weeks you could combine them.

IceCreamWithSprinkles · 04/05/2023 13:24

I know it’s not really recommended, but I borrowed a friends Doppler and listened to the heartbeat myself every few days, I found it so reassuring for that time before you feel movements. BUT, only if you can keep in mind that not finding the heartbeat does not mean terrible things, as obviously it’s less sensitive, I wasn’t trained, and it was probably too early to find it when I was trying to anyway!

CornishGem1975 · 04/05/2023 13:29

Good decision @ShyLavender Hope all is well and you some reassurance!

ShyLavender · 04/05/2023 19:08

Thanks for your support everyone- little one is fine and I think I just have to accept that spotting is my “normal”. Thanks again xx

Ah that’s wonderful news. 💐

allgoodthings84 · 04/05/2023 20:24

That’s great news 😊

CornishGem1975 · 05/05/2023 11:11

Great news!

Some people do have spotting all the way through, it's unnerving but just one of those things. It could be the changes in your cervix, I had an absolutely huge bleed at 5 weeks, like a horror movie but think it was just a sensitive cervix as it happened after sex.
