11 weeks brown discharge

Hi. This is my first pregnancy and I'm 11+1 weeks pregnant. For the last two days I've been having brown discharge and there's a small amount on tissue when I wipe. My midwife was unavailable yesterday so I spoke to another midwife who said as it's brown and I'm not in pain I can wait until my dating scan which is next Tuesday. I'm terrified of going for my scan in case it's bad news. Has anyone else had the same experience? Thanks.

Having this right now OP. I called my EPU, who told me to call my midwives, who told me to report via an app, which then said I need to speak to a gp. Went and had a F2F with gp and he was very frustrated as to why the midwives couldn't just refer. Called EPU to refer me but earliest appt was Fri lunch and my dating scan is Fri morning so he said to just go to dating scan and raise it there-they will flag anything with epu on friday. He said if it gets worse call 111. Hope this helps somewhat 😊 let me know how you get on.

I had brown discharge when I was 13 weeks for 4/5 days. I rang my midwife on day 3 (the first day was a Saturday so knew no point then and we can’t self refer to EPU here before 20 weeks) and midwife was very unconcerned and said it’s pretty normal but to book a GP appointment for a swab in case it’s an infection. My GP was more concerned as I had 2 miscarriages previously so referred me EPU for the next morning.

EPU were fantastic and did an internal scan so could check my cervix at the same time. Everything was fine so the consultant prescribed me progesterone to take up until 16 weeks (only had this prescribed because of previous miscarriages though) and she said that it was likely to be implantation blood that had taken awhile to work its way out as brown is old blood and the progesterone was only precautionary.

I’m now 23+4 weeks and haven’t had it again. If it’s brown and doesn’t turn to red bleeding then it’s usually nothing to worry about but always worth asking to be checked. I would ring your GP to refer you if your midwife won’t.

I'm not saying this to worry you but i wish they'd take brown blood more seriously. I bled for nearly 2 weeks and it ended in an MMC. I hope it turns out okay for you. X

Definitely push to be seen sooner*

I had this at around 10 weeks - I had brown discharge (quite light but lasted for nearly a week) - I didn’t have any associated pain and i thought since it was brown it was old and less of a worry. I had my 1st midwife appointment when this was happening and she recommended going A&E but caveated I may not be taken seriously if it’s brown blood. I ended up going (for peace of mind) - no one made me feel dramatic for going, from arrival to speaking to having tests run and speaking a doctor was a few hours. She said it should be fine but organised a scan for the next day - they do found a small bleed (think term is subchorionic hematoma). They said to avoid intercourse and strenuous activity. It was still there on my 12 week scan but had disappeared by 20 week scan and so far so good after that.

Just had this myself over the wknd. Rang the EPU who could not have been less concerned, said it was probably just old cervical blood and to get back in touch if I started bleeding fresh blood. It stopped after a day or two.

I had this at about nine weeks. My lovely midwife sent me to EPU, I was able to get a scan. All was fine. My midwife wasn't worried in the slightest but sent me to put my mind at rest. She said that if it was bright red blood and I was having pain that would be more of a concern. I hope all goes well for you.

Just to add, If you've had sex recently that could be a cause of it. Very common when pregnant.

I had this around the same time, it then progressed in to fresh red blood (and quite a lot of it), turns out my placenta was low lying and it caused bleeding for a few weeks. By my 20 week scan, it had moved up and I’ve not had any bleeding since - I’m now 28 weeks and all is perfect. I know how worrying it is so am sending lots of strength your way and hope the scan goes well 🤞🏼

I had this with both pregnancies from around 8 weeks to 12 weeks on and off. Sometimes it was even a bit pink too (not bright red). Everything was totally fine both times.
