Intense pain in back under ribs on right side

Hi, just wondering if anyone had similar symptoms and what it turned out to be? I’m in the hospital but no one has said what it could be and I’m really worried as I’m only 30wks. I know I should just wait for the doctors to figure it out… I woke up tonight suddenly to excruciating pain in my back on the right hand side. It then has been painful constantly but with waves of really intense pain cause me to vomit and leaving me winded. The pain radiates like below my ribs at the front as well as to my uterus. As far as I can tell from the monitoring baby is fine and is kicking lots that’s for sure! Hopefully I get some answers soon! 😖

Sorry not medical, no idea. Indigestion Or trapped wind? Hope nothing more sinister. Sending support!

I have this sometimes, and it is a trapped nerve (29 weeks so similar stage.)

It is breathtakingly painful but its bark is worse than its bite, if you see what I mean. Of course, get checked but it’s nothing to be alarmed about if that’s what it is Flowers

Could be gallstones...the pain from that can be very intense.

I had this during both pregnancies from 29 weeks onwards and it never went until literally the minute the babies were born. It's horrible you have my sympathy. Laying flat on the floor with my arms above my head used to help me.

It could be indigestion . I actually
Had similar 1 week post birth ( though I didn't have any back pain ) and went to a and e . It was so painful I was convinced it was something more sinister . The pain started in the middle of my abdomen , just below my ribs, as a sharp pain and radiated out to my chest as a more dull but intense pain . It would come in waves so I would have 30 Mins of so of no pain and then multiple shooting pains within a short space of time . I was vomiting with the pain too .

I ended up with some omeprazole and anti sickness and was feeling okay within a couple of days.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the replies! Pregnancy can feel so lonely especially when you’re unwell!

the doctor suspects it’s something kidney related: I’ve got some antibiotics though no markers for infection found to suggest a UTI and a scan booked in to check it’s not kidney stones! Hopefully it clears up in a the next few days 😅

Sorry to tag on to your post OP but wondered if you are any better now or have any answers?
Im 26 weeks tomorrow and for the past 2 days have been getting burning/stabbing pain in my right side for ribs which radiates to my back too. Its hard to know whether to just leave these things, typical its getting worse tonight on a bank holiday.
Did yours go?

Roselilly36 · 28/05/2023 19:56

Does the pain start/finish suddenly? Have you eaten anything fatty? If so it could be gallstones, the pain from gallstones is absolutely dreadful. I hope it settles down.

Namingnumber2 · 28/05/2023 20:06

It does come and go throught out the day but seems to be worse it I sit or after lying down (not sure if it's after eating or not) possibly?
I don't really eat anything fatty as I've had terrible sickness this time round and my diet is pretty much sandwiches, plain crisps and fruit 🙈
I last ate at 6 (I don't have any evening meals just a good lunch) which was some Strawberries I did have some cream with them (so maybe that's not helped) but I still have the pain now, just sort of leaning on my gym ball does ease it alittle.

It's so hard to know whether to just leave these things or if you should tell some one, I don't want to be a nuisance to my midwife 🙈 I am next seeing her in 2 weeks

@Namingnumber2 I was in and out of the maternity assessment unit for a few days but they never really gave a definitive diagnosis. the most likely thing was it was a small kidney stone passing as the final night I had severe pain it moved down towards my groin and then I never had it again! I have had lots of (less painful) muscle spasms since but managed to see a physio through work & they gave me lots of stretches which are really helping! If you’re up to it, I would go in to your local maternity assessment unit as they can rule out any of the nasties and refer you for further investigations if they think it could be kidney/gall related! And most importantly, help with pain relief!
