So I had a CT scan in the ER and was told I need it to check for a pulmonary embolism. Im scared I’ve put my child at risk and myself for cancer. I’ve read so many bad side effects of the radiation for me and my unborn and im so upset I did it when it come out clear anyway. Has anyone done a CT for blood clots in pregnancy?

I can't help with having had one but honestly what choice did you have?

You made the best decision with the information you had and if you'd have left it and you did have it then what? Dr's aren't in the habit of throwing ct scans around unless the benefit would outweigh the risk.
Baby is pretty developed at this point and as for you it's a tiny amount that yes theoretically increases your chances but may never cause any issues.
I know you're beside yourself with worry so telling you not to worry is pointless but it's going to be OK, please don't give yourself a hard time x

You’re right. I think I’ll get over it when I give birth and know she’s ok. I’m a hypochondriac so it doesn’t help the situation x

You're feelings are completely valid and pregnancy is nerve wracking at the best of times without additional health things but you've done all you can and when she's in your arms it will all be worth it x

I think so too. I’ve also had previous miscarriages and keep reading stillbirth stories. All of this is just getting too much for me

I had to just completely stop reading stuff like that and stay of social media because it was all worrying me too much.

There's a couple of similar questions about ct scans under this one that are quite reassuring from other people too so maybe if you look at those it will help too

I had a CT scan for the same reason at 19 weeks. Gynae doctor told me they order them every day for pregnant woman the risk is far far less than having an undiagnosed clot. Radiology has come on so much in recent years the levels are very low

Overandabove1 · 30/04/2023 10:59

Sorry forgot to add 27 weeks now and all looking ok on scans etc

Petrapanacotta · 30/04/2023 15:03

Hi! I had this with my youngest boy. I had a PE and was ok medicine. The scan was uncomfortable and I was in tears with panic. But they are now a mad as a box of frogs 6yr old! I read all about the side effects and possible Implications. But I could have died and my kid otherwise. Hugs I know it's scary. But they will give you the lowest dose possible. Remember modern medicine has great advancements and woman undergo chemo while pregnant. X

I’ve had a CT scan with contrast & an MRI whilst pregnant at 23 weeks, now 33 weeks so can’t comment on effects but the doctors told me there’s only small risks from these scans and the benefits from having the scan outweigh the risks. So far baby is meeting all measurements, good movements etc 🙂

Pris011 · 03/05/2023 01:52

Oh good we had it almost same time. I went to an appointment yesterday she said the radiation is very minimal. You’re right benefit’s outweigh risks

Any update? I’ve just been through the same thing but had two ct scans and chest x ray all in 24 hours. I know benefit outweighs risk but I can’t stop stressing

PerrinAybara · 10/08/2023 12:41

I had an x-ray and scan due to possible PE with my youngest (it wasn't a PE in the end, fortunately).

He is now 10 and getting ready to go to the park with some school friends.

I know it's hard not to stress but the benefits far outweigh the risks.
