Zinc deficiency and shit gp

Hi,

I'm 15 weeks pregnant and a few weeks ago a blood test done by my gp showed low zinc. They asked me to repeat it, so did. Second test showed low vitamin d, no reading for zinc and asked me to repeat. Took fucking ages to get a blood test appt, finally went on Monday.

Gp text me tonight at 5.45 asking me to call on Tuesday about my results. I called and asked to speak to someone but just got told it wss too late in the day.

I've since googled and realised how dangerous low zinc is in pregnancy and I'm freaking the fuck out. Has anyone had this and do you know if 3 days is too long to wait?! I'm.worried it's an absorption problem as both vits are low and I've never had an issue before. I'm caring for my terminally ill mum at the moment and just don't need this stress. What would you do?

Most vitamin D is absorbed from sunlight rather than absorbed in your gut, so it doesn't necessarily point to an absorption problem.

Probably just buy some vitamin D and zinc supplements for now and try and spend some time outdoors?

I forgot to mention I've been taking pregnacare and pre natal vitamins since prior to conception, so I take my daily recommended amount of zinc and vitamin d. Vit d isn't my concern, its zonc

Would it be possible to phone the midwife today, she'll be able to review your test results and can talk to a weekend doctor to get something prescribed so you don't need to wait until Tues.

I completely sympathise. My vit d, ferritin and thyroid were low, I got the results at the end of the day on a Friday and was panicking about how I couldn't action anything for several days. I called the midwife Sat morning and she was able to sort a prescription for me which I picked up from the hospital on Saturday afternoon. I am quite sure it won't be an absorption issue, even though you've not had deficiencies in the past - so much of your nutrition will be diverted to your baby right now. All the best today, hope the midwife can help sort something out for you

This is such good advice, thank you. I've just text her to see if she's working today and whether she can advise. My GP surgery are truly shit and I've been trying to move but was advised to wait until after my IVF treatment and pregnancy were over to keep things in order, but I'm truly fed up of them

Why would you not just buy some zinc supplements if you are that worried about it?

Busybeezs · 29/04/2023 14:15

I'm taking zinc supplements and have been throughout my pregnancy?

If you're already taking zinc and are still deficient then you probably need to take more zinc?
Not sure what else you are expecting from a doctor this weekend

I asked the doctor if I should take more zinc after my last blood test and he said no, if I'm deficient in more than one thing it could be an absorption problem. He asked me to do another blood test to check as he thought it would go away. It took weeks to get another bloods appt. I did this and am still deficient and they've told me that it's low but no detail about how low and wouldn't give me any advice and now I'm worried that it's going to cause birth defects. You seem to have a bit of a problem with me so I don't get why you're posting?
