Statutory maternity pay 2 jobs

Hi all, totally jumping the gun here because I am not even pregnant yet but currently undergoing fertility treatment and trying to plan finances for an upcoming house move. We are trying to work out what we could stretch to mortgage wise if we are lucky enough to conceive and with me then taking a full year off on mat leave.

I currently split my working week between two jobs. I qualify for statutory maternity pay with both jobs (have been in both for long enough and earn enough from both. Both have also confirmed this with me.)

Would I be entitled to claim SMP from both employers simultaneously?? Google seems to think yes but this seems too good to be true. Would this mean I would be entitled to double the weekly statutory amount that I would get if I was full time at just one job?

Feel like I must be missing something.

I don’t know the answer for sure but I imagine you will still only be entitled to the maximum same as if you had just one job.

This is screenshot from the gov website. It doesn’t mention how many jobs just says weekly earnings so suggests you can claim from both if when added together 90% of your wage is lower than £172.48. If your wages total higher than this you would be entitled to the same SMP if you just had one job earning over this amount.

Yes, you get SMP twice. Each employer will calculate what you are entitled to, ad xo.pketly ignore your other earnings.
You can also start SMP at different times for the 2 jobs.

I’m 27 weeks pregnant and will be taking SMP from two jobs - my accountant says I’ll get the full statutory amount from each (I agree, it does sound too good to be true!!)

Yes you'd be entitled to both. You can start and end each leave at different times.

Amazing thanks all, I was sure it seemed too good to be true but perhaps not then!

Have found the dream house and have been worrying about whether we'd be able to keep up mortgage payments if we are lucky enough for the treatment to work for us. This would go a way towards helping!

I suppose you were paying 2 lots of NI and tax with 2 jobs.

Apat10 · 29/04/2023 20:40

@dementedpixie yep!

Hi, just wondered if you have gotten pregnant yet and claiming SMP? I am in the same position! So happy if I can claim it twice

dementedpixie · 23/12/2024 17:36

If you qualify for SMP from both jobs then you can claim SMP from both. You can have maternity leaves at different times too from each job.

Starbiscuit · 24/12/2024 04:55

I am currently on maternity leave and getting full SMP from both. I also started each maternity leave on a different date, first job finished at 36 weeks, second job finished the day dc was born 👍🏻
