How often do they get the gender wrong?

We had a private scan done last night, 17 weeks+5 and they disclosed the gender, a girl. She gave us some potty shots and my partner is now convinced she's wrong and it looks male. Now I'm doubting the gender all over and he has me a little skeptical. How often are sonographers wrong in detecting gender? Is it common? I would of never second guessed it either if he hadn't and I'm feeling so stupid 🤦‍♀️
Added wee 3D pic of babe because I OBSESSED with that wee smile!!!😍😍😍

I don't know how often it happens but my cousin got told she was having a girl at the 20 week scan and then at a growth scan at 30+ weeks they said he was a boy. She'd been out and got so much girly stuff too 🙈

I can't help with the scan as I have no idea what I'm looking for but your next scan shouldn't be too long a wait providing you're in UK. They will be able to tell you then if baby is cooperating of course 🥰

Tryingtoconceivenumber2 · 28/04/2023 10:02

I would say that is a girl. You are looking for lines but I have only seen a girl one as I have a girl myself x

Jammiedodger12 · 28/04/2023 10:38

I know two couples who were told the wrong gender - One found out at 30 weeks it was a girl instead of a boy and the other didn't find out until the birth. It does happen.

TeddyBeans · 28/04/2023 10:40

Those scans look girly to me. They got both mine right. My boy was very obviously a boy and my girl looked exactly like yours

HauntedLady · 28/04/2023 10:41

I just googled “potty shots” as I don’t recognise the term and now I think I need to hand my phone into the police. I’m still not sure what you mean by it, OP - or is it a typo? But if anyone else is wondering do NOT Google it. Please.

HauntedLady · 28/04/2023 10:43

Wrt your question though - was the person who did your 3d scan a trained sonographer? I think rules are less stringent at private clinics than on NHS so they’re more likely to make a mistake. When I was pregnant with DS1 I got a scan at 16 weeks at a private clinic and they said “of course we can never say with 100% certainty what sex your baby is, but that is his penis there”. Unsurprisingly it was a boy.

PickledScrump · 28/04/2023 10:48

@HauntedLady its the common term given to a picture of the genital area of the baby. It’s not a pleasant term but it is what it is universally called.

@Erin12345 they are not 100% but yours does look like a girl. Ask at your 20 week scan for confirmation. Was your husband hoping for a boy and is in denial? I can’t see anything that looks like a visible penis.

FanFckingTastic · 28/04/2023 10:58

I was told that no. 3 child was another boy (two lovely sons already)

No. 3 child was NOT a boy. Midwife was very amused when she was born as we were all expecting a boy, not a girl :-)

I think it's unusual but it definitely does happen.

😂😂 made me chuckle!

AfterGlow87 · 28/04/2023 11:12

Looks like a girl to me - It has “hamburger” look and there’s nothing obvious sticking up!

YouveGotAFastCar · 28/04/2023 11:14

Definitely looks like a little girl.

Lcb123 · 28/04/2023 11:15

It's sex. and it doesn't matter.

Izzie94x · 28/04/2023 11:40

Looks girly to me! Although, ours was very obviously a boy!! There’s no denying it lol. It can happen, but as you’re 17+ I’d say it’s pretty accurate.

I know they’re more likely to get girls wrong than boys though!

@Lcb123 OP never said it mattered? Simply asking a question - and the baby will either be male or female. Why are people so bloody obsessed with saying sex and not gender ffs lol - fyi private scans are called gender scans

HauntedLady · 28/04/2023 12:19

Thanks @PickledScrump. Just when I think I can confidently say I’m fluent in English, another term crops up that I’ve never come across.

Sb86 · 28/04/2023 13:41

@HauntedLady 🤣🤣🤣 your comment made me laugh so much...please do not Google it 😅

TomatoSandwiches · 28/04/2023 13:49

I have two boys one girl, looks like a girl to me.

violetskypurple · 28/04/2023 13:52

Looks the same as both my girls potty shots (and I was convinced they were wrong both times!)

Roselilly36 · 28/04/2023 13:57

Usually pretty accurate, they were right with me, said boy both times and were correct. Having said that someone I know was told boy at an early scan, at the 20 wks scan was asked if she wanted to know the sex, told girl and she did have a girl. Many congrats, such an exciting time and lovely to see baby smiling already

RagingWoke · 28/04/2023 14:04

Is your dh a trained sonographer? If not I'd probably trust the trained sonographer over his opinion.

It does happen, the only cases of scans getting wrong are very overweight women or unusually positioned babies where it's harder to see anything. It's a pretty small chance though.

CinderRosie · 28/04/2023 14:07

No idea how often they get it wrong and can only offer my own anecdote - a colleague's brother was told him and his wife were expecting a girl and it was a boy. They had a whole pink nursery/clothes 🙃

TomatoSandwiches · 28/04/2023 14:10

Why does your partner think it's not a girl?

bellinisurge · 28/04/2023 14:18

It's sex not gender and it doesn't matter.

QueenBitch666 · 28/04/2023 14:31

It's sex not gender

mondaytosunday · 28/04/2023 15:09

My SIL was told her third (after two boys) was a girl. Thrilled to bits she went all out on a girly baby wardrobe. Her son looked rather grumpy those first few months wearing all that pink!

BrimFullOfAsher · 28/04/2023 15:41

US looks like a girl to me. Can't see anything on the 3D though lol.

They do get it wrong sometimes, obviously. As a PP said, it's more common for it be wrong when they think its a girl though
