No yolk sac @ 5 weeks

Hi there

I think I am 5+2/3 weeks pregnant.

I have been spotting (as I did in my last pregnancy which resulted in my beautiful little girl) but today I went for an early ultrasound to see if there was anything amiss.

They could see a gestational sac but no yolk sac and told me to return in one week for another scan.

Can anyone else share their experiences of this? How did it turn out?

They don't recommend scans till a few weeks later.

Did you have a transvaginal?

I had exactly the same - early scan after spotting (5 weeks and 5 days I think) and just an empty sac visible. Had to go back 10 days later and all was fine. In my case, it was just too early to see anything.

Hey, sorry your going through this. The limbo is hell.
I had the exact same. I was 6+3 with spotting. Went to epu and had internal scan and only sack was seen.
Went back 10 days later and all was fine, even my dates were exact to what I thought.

The sonographer said it's really common at this stage as they are working with millimeters to see and yolk/fetal pole etc.. could be covered by fluid/shadowing as not everyone's anatomy is the same.

Hi I had a transvaginal scan today at 5+1 and could only see a small sac too. The Dr said she wasn't concerned as it was very early. I'm getting rescanned in 2 weeks. I'm a bit anxious like you but most articles and forums do say that it's too early to see something. Lots of articles say yolk sac doesn't show until around 5 1/2 weeks. Do update us with your scan results next week!

I don't understand why people are getting such early scans. I think it just causes extra anxiety at an already very anxious
time. Every EPU I've been under won't scan before six weeks. I hope your next scan goes well.

I agree - it's the opposite of a 'reassurance' scan when it just causes extra anxiety.

@SpaghettiSquash mine was offered by my consultant at a hospital appointment. It wasn't my initial plan to be scanned. I'm guessing OP was also offered one.

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences. It's comforting to know there might still be a chance that all is okay.

I think they did an ultrasound (transvaginal) at this early stage as they wanted to confirm the pregnancy was in the uterus and that the bleeding wasn't from an ectopic.

I do tend to ovulate later than day 14 so hopefully this is just a case of the pregnancy being a few days earlier along than I thought it was... I'll post back next week after my next scan.

Good news. Scan today showed yolk sac and heartbeat thankfully and measuring in line with my dates. Last week's scan was simply too early to see very much

So happy for you .I am about 5+ days pregnant.I went for a scan on Friday only gestational sac seen they told me to come in two days as my beta was 11.000 So two days later she was checking internaly for 10 minutes and nothing.She told us to book a scan .That she can’t see anything .She was about to finish and she said wait I just found something a sac !!She said I have to go back on my words as she just found it and that it might be early.I don’t know she already said all this first and then change her mind.SO SCARED.Probably it will be miscarriage !!!! I should have an embryo at this high Hcg ??

Sorry to hear you are going through this as it is so worrying and the wait is so hard.

I didn't have my HCG levels checked so I can't share in that regard but I know I was told at the initial scan (which prompted my original post) that things were not measuring in line with my dates but then when I went back for the next scan it was measuring ahead of the dates. So I think it was just so early at that first scan that they couldn't see things clearly.

I really hope it turns out the same for you.

I just have my scan and baby was seen a bit slower heartbeat but I think it was to early 😊so happy next scan in two weeks,finger crossed.Obviously they can’t see everything that earl.Pregnancy needed some time !!

i had a private scan yesterday, I was 4+6, exactly 5w today going by ovulation. All they could see was an empty gestational sac, the scan was transvaginal. Is this normal for that gestation? They referred me to the hospital to rescan and put the pregnancy as a ‘PUL’ pregnancy unknown placating… he said he checked my tubes and they were clear.
ive also still been doing pregnancy tests which are still super dark.

was I just to early to see anything? Very anxious now!
