So I went to take a HCG (pregnancy test this morning) and accidentally took an LH one in my morning haze and it came back positive - does anyone have any idea why it may have come back positive approx 10 days after my supposed ovulation? Also the pregnancy test was negative...

For context I say supposed ovulation as I havnt yet received a positive result around my ovulation (which is a bit confusing in itself) but it does get higher for a couple of days around 50-70% (just not peak) and I use an app to track it etc. but today when I took the LH test it was 87% which is the highest I have ever recorded...I am due to start my period in 4/5 days time.

Any help please?

I'd say your probably ovulating later than normal/than you think.
I used to ovulate only 5-7 days prior to my period before I had my first baby.

Either ovulating late or pregnant (ovulation tests also pick up hCG as they share the same subunit). If the hCG test is negative then later ovulation is the more likely, but worth testing again in a few days if you don’t get your period. I used ovulation tests instead of pregnancy tests while TTC as they are so much cheaper! Either way the cheap dipsticks on Amazon are perfectly good, don’t waste money on the fancy ones in the shops if you’re in it for the long haul. Good luck TTC!

I used to do old ovulation tests to confirm my HCG was still high (when I didn’t have any preg tests left!) in the early pre-scan pregnancy days filled with paranoia. I was shocked but some do work but I couldn’t explain how. But I’m pretty sure I didn’t do it until a few weeks in so I’m not sure if this would be pregnancy or late ovulation. Just get a proper test and good luck on your TTC journey.

I meant to say do a proper test in a few days again if no period.

Btw, ovulation tests drove me mad when TTC as according to them I never ovulated. Never got a positive! I had to throw my thermometer out as I was obsessed with my basal body temp too. As soon as I did this (and stopped eating clean for just a few weeks!), I had my lucky month. Thinking about you.

Thank you everyone! I did actually have an miscarriage back in February and I ovulated as normal mid-month that cycle so I guess likely it is a one off late ovulation or I could be pregnant (hopefully the later) - just so confusing and hard to know

I think it's too early to test at this stage anyway. Take a pregnancy test nearer to when your period is due.

How dark is your test line? I used ovulation test strips as well as pregnancy strips to test during my tww. My ovulation test was 0.2 (on the premom app) on 10DPO - the same day I got a very faint line on a pregnancy strip and a positive clearblue. The LH tests got progressively darker as the days went on. Apparently they can't distinguish between LH and HCG which is why you can get a positive OPK when pregnant!

ratherbthedevil · 27/04/2023 18:12

OPKs can show positive when there is HCG present. So if the OPK was positive due to HCG I would expect the pregnancy test to be positive too.

LH can fluctuate throughout the cycle. Do you have PCOS? I do and I can have multiple LH surges before the real one so I temped alongside using OPKs so I can determine which surge was the one.

Also, some people say that the LH can have another surge before their period is due. I never found it happen to me but apparently it can happen.

Ovulation tests can also be used as pregnancy tests. Mine came back very dark! (LH test) so I took a pregnancy test and it was positive.
