Light periods after miscarriage

Hi everyone. I’m a bit concerned…

I had a mmc in March and had the surgery (D&C). I was told my periods would likely return after 4-6 weeks. 4 weeks + 1 day later AF arrived, which I thought was a very good sign. But it was super light - only bled for about 3 days and the blood wouldn’t have filled a single pad overall (sorry if tmi!).

My second period since the surgery arrived yesterday, only 19 days after the last. My periods weren’t absolutely regular before the pregnancy, ranging from 25-30 days, but they usually arrived on around day 26. So this period is a good week early, and seems light again so far.

I realise periods can go a bit mad after D&Cs but they’re usually heavier, not lighter? I’m panicking slightly that I’ve got Asherman’s or something like that. My partner and I would like to start ttc asap but I’m unsure if anything is likely to happen with periods like this!

Thank you for any and all experiences xx

Hey Hun,

I had a MMC in January and thought the same as you, that the periods following would be awful. I had natural miscarriage at 14 weeks supported with 4 misprosotol tablets to get rid of remaining tissue. My period arrived 5 weeks later and like yours was 3 days and not very heavy.

I've been scanned and all seemed fine, my February and march periods were both only 3 days and very light. This cycle I had a 5 day period and a fair bit heavier! I have had 28-30 day cycles so not sure about yours coming around so quickly but I think it's all just part of your body 'going back to normal' I also had a lot of weight gain which is super unusual for me so I asked for my hormones to be checked as I was convinced something was wrong too but turns out everything is normal 🤷🏼‍♀️. I think your body will settle back into a more normal routine for you again soon x

JumbleJo · 25/04/2023 20:12

@Ttcmumma Thank you 😊 That’s really good to hear that yours seem to be getting back to normal! So sorry you’ve had to go through a mmc too x

Hi @JumbleJo Im sorry for your loss.

I had a MMC last year, followed by 2 lots of medical management and an MVA. When my period returned it was very light as well, not more than spotting for a few days. I too was worried about this, and they didn’t get any heavier (although they did seem regular at 27/28 days).

However I had 4 very light periods then fell pregnant, and I’m now 27 weeks.

So just wanted to say it doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t get pregnant again.

Wishing you luck

JumbleJo · 26/04/2023 07:47

@Natpat81 I’m so sorry to hear about the mmc. Wonderful that you got pregnant again though, even with light periods! I think I’m more worried about the really short cycle but hopefully my body just needs a bit more time to sort itself out. Thanks for responding x

@JumbleJo - did your periods get heavier again?? I had exactly the same and it turned out I did have Ashermans. It’s rare, but my consultant said that he thinks it happens in 5% of D&Cs. So if you’re worried I would try and get it checked out. I went to Dr Lower (privately but my BUPA paid) as he’s a top specialist. He usually asks you to see what three periods post MMC are like though.

Lmcx · 27/07/2023 15:56

hi all,

hope you don’t mind me jumping in! Hopefully you’s are all doing well.

just to ask how you’s all got on?

my pregnancy ended April, wasn’t offered medical management until June which didn’t work. Not much bleeding either, just mostly brown discharge. 27th June I had cramp which was awful. Ended up in A&e, just as I was getting taken in. Passed the remaining material, bloods taken and temp etc, another scan which confirmed all had gone. Bleed for 6 days, first 2 days heavy (sort of like my normal period, but I don’t think as heavy). Spotted until ovulation signs, then period came on Monday, not a lot of bleeding, really concerned now that I may have had an infection or damaged my lining with scarring ☹️ when I was scanned they did say lining was thin (not to me another doc) didn’t seem concerned. To note, during 11 weeks of retained product I did have 2 courses of antibiotics..

im sure you will all know yourselves how anxious and consuming it is with worry! I am just hoping for a positive outcome.

is it ok do u think that my bleeding is lighter? I am trying to book an apt with doc to get referred, I just want it all to be over and ok ☹️

any advice etc would be so appreciated!

tia x

Sorry to hear about your MMC. I had a MMC and every period was way lighter for me after that, and also more regular (they were super irregular before). Currently nearly 16 weeks pregnant with my rainbow baby 🌈. Things seemed a lot different after MMC, we used ovulation sticks but I could actually feel when I was ovulating without them (ovulation pains) for quite a long time afterwards, which I’d never experienced before, although this wasn’t permanent. I think it takes the body some time to readjust

Lmcx · 28/07/2023 22:25

Congratulations Coinicon 🌈 lovely news. That makes me feel a little reassured that it happens, as everywhere I was reading was saying heavier period. Just really odd, I was always heavier before, but really light flows of blood over 4/5 days this month. Just gonna manage the stress levels (that won’t be helping) and see how I go next month.

Lmcx · 23/08/2023 19:29

Just want to post back an update; as I was trolling through threads torturing myself. My period arrived and more similar to what it was before, definitely more heavier. So it really does take time for the body to go back to normal (I was cycle number 3)

just wanted to give a little reassurance to someone who’s period is all over the place after MMC (who didn’t get surgery, as everyone’s seemed to be heavier)

x

Hi jumblejo I'm sorry I know this post is a few months ago.
Can I ask did they return to normal?
I'm the exact same as you even with the period 19 days after the first one.
I so worried thus is my second cycle

CharTT33 · 31/10/2023 21:29

Hey,

I had a missed carriage in January and then a medical management which went on till April then May I had a hysterscopy to remove retained products. First two periods were both on time and but super light barely filling one pad and then I fell pregnant again in August. Unfortunately I miss carried again and I’ve just had my second period and they have both been super lightLasting 2/3 days. My periods were completely normal before last 5-7 days normal flow. Has anyone else experienced this ?

please help i’m pulling my hair out.

Lapinlupin · 12/02/2024 08:30

I'm relieved but also concerned to read that other people are in the same boat as me.

I had a miscarriage then d&c at 9 weeks in August and since then my periods are significantly different. Whereas previously I would bleed for 4-5 days and sometimes soak through a pad, now I'm lucky if I bleed 3 days and rarely need more than a pantyliner. The blood is also browner than before.
Despite doing all the things we're meant to, there's not been a whiff of a pregnancy since.

I went to the docs in early January as despite all the info saying this is 'normal', it's now been going on for longer than I was pregnant. I've been pushing for a scan but it's taking time and I feel so frustrated, stuck and scared.

Lmcx · 12/02/2024 11:55

Sorry to hear Lapinlupin about ur loss 💔. Is there anyway you can push for a referral and explain how it’s impacting you? Do you have medical insurance at all?

i did original post on this saying things got better, which they did from my first bleed.. but my periods are defo not what they were. I didn’t have a D&C, but I did have RPOC and medical management.. my periods really should have went back to normal but they have not. I get 2 days of good blood flow, sometimes 3 then red spotting for a further 3 days. I am going private as I am lucky to have medical insurance via work. My ultrasound has been arranged for 19th of this month, won’t tell me anything but will at least look at my lining. Will post an update, just know ur not alone. I basically got laughed at for saying asherman as I didn’t have a d&c (although RPOC or infection can absolutely cause it!)

CharTT33 · 12/02/2024 12:53

@Lapinlupin @Lmcx hey ladies so an update on my situation. I got pregnant pretty much after I last posted and I’ve had a positive outcome so far… I’m never waited for my periods to come back to normal I just kept trying and got pregnant… Now 15 weeks pregnant xx

Lapinlupin · 12/02/2024 15:20

No medical insurance alas. And I can't afford to go private but would consider seeing a specialist if I knew it wouldn't bankrupt me.
I just want answers.

My doc is reluctant to do anything further until we have the results from the scan - which I'm still waiting for the hospital to invite me to. She said the invite should come within 4 weeks of the request and yet..
I've explained about the impact on my mental health and how bonking every other day when I'm not menstruating still isn't getting me pregnant but it makes no difference.
I'm not even sure if she knows what else to look for or could be done.
I've had basic blood tests - hormone levels are 'within the normal range' although in my eyes on the lower end of the scale but my potassium is very high. I get the impression though that as long as everything is withing the 'normal' range there's "nothing to worry about".
It's so frustrating.

AnxiousPoster · 13/08/2024 14:48

@Lapinlupin how are things now I have the same issue super lighter periods and can’t conceive over the past 2 months. Did you manage to conceive?

Lapinlupin · 13/08/2024 15:07

Yes. We had a positive test about two and a half months after that post.
I started taking ferrous sulphate tablets as my blood test showed low iron levels which I think really helped - I guess my doc didn't notice this low level or thought it not worth noting as I'd previously had anaemia?
It wasn't until speaking to midwives more recently that they said I'd probably lost a significant amount of blood during the miscarriage and my body couldn't do anything until those levels were more stable.

I did end up bleeding a little more on my period but still light and short.

It's crazy that with all the years of medical knowledge the female body is still a mystery..

Wishing you luck and love x
