is it normal to only see a gestational sac (not a yolk sac) at 5 weeks on an early scan?

Hi,

Went for an early ultrasound. I'm 5 weeks but wasn't sure of when I ovulated. Went for the scan and she confirmed there is a or pregnancy that is in the right place but she couldn't see a yolk sac or a heartbeat. She said it's normal at 5 weeks not to see it (it was an abdominal scan I didn't want a vaginal one).

Is it normal to not see a yolk sac at 5 weeks and only the gestational sac. I feel a bit anxious

Yes because you're very early. As you don't know when you ovulated you could be closer to 4 weeks as well.

Especially as you had just an abdominal scan, the picture wouldn't be as clear.

At this stage in pregnancy every thing is sooooooooooo tiny. It's really hard to properly date pregnancy as well. Using your LMP to date your pregnancy relies on an average 28 day cycle with a 14 day luteral phase. It's so easy for that to be out if you ovulate later, have longer or shorter cycles, took longer to implant etc.

Pregnancy can make anxiety worse. It's worth engaging with your maternity service to be referred to the maternal mental health team.

I keep reading and over thinking but I know I should just wait as it's too early ... fingers crossed it works out
