Regret asking to know gender?

Hello!

I went for a private NIPT test yesterday and didn’t realise sex could also be tested, had just been focusing on the health aspects of the test.

We had always said we didn’t want to know, but then when asked we were on the fence and then made a snap decision and said yes.

Now I’m full of regret! The results will be here in 7-10 working days and the sex will be on the same results page. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and did you manage to avoid finding out?

We went with Ultrasound Direct so wondering if I know where the sex will be written, I can cover it up and just read the health results part maybe. Or wait for the midwife appointment on 28th, but obviously we want to know the results of the NIPT. My partner offered to just read it for us and not tell me, which I know he’d be great at keeping it secret, but we’re in this together!

It doesn’t really matter either way and I saw someone wrote that finding out is an extra day of surprise as their arrival is a surprise anyway, which is a nice way of looking at it. But just keen to keep one of life’s mysteries for now!

Thanks so much all.

Do you have a friend or relative that you could ask to open the results and cover the part you don’t want to see before giving it back to you?

I would take the paperwork to ultra sound direct, do they have a shop?

Explain and ask a worker in there to cover up or cross out anywhere it says the sex of the baby.

We also waited to find out the sex of both our children and it was magical.

Roselilly36 · 16/04/2023 08:20

I found out the sex with both of my pregnancies, never regretted the decision, personally. It’s still magical when you meet your baby for the first time, I remember just holding my boys, took me a while to check they were actually boys, as it was the last thing on my mind. Good luck with your pregnancy OP.

Can you not contact them and say you've changed your mind and no longer want that information and then get someone else to look first just to be sure they've removed it.

PuttingDownRoots · 16/04/2023 08:22

We knew with our first, but not with our secret (wrong position at scan). It made no difference whatsoever. Knowing the sex doesn't mean you know their personality... and honestly they are 10&11 now and I'm still finding out stuff about their personalities!

acuppatea · 16/04/2023 08:47

Ultrasound Direct send the results as a single a4 page pdf file and you will be able to see the sex result right next to the trisomy results if you open it. But they're sent by the receptionist at the clinic, on an individual basis, so it would be worth calling them to see if they could remove that info.

Thanks so much all!!

@Roselilly36 This is exactly what I needed to hear, you’ll be so right with the moment! Having never gone through it I never even thought about that. It really doesn’t matter at all, I can’t wait to just hold them!

And @PuttingDownRoots I’m so glad to hear it didn’t make a difference either way for you too! Again, so right, they’ll be a whole new human I’ll spend a lifetime getting to know 😍

When I searched this topic, everyone was saying how magical it was not finding out and they preferred not knowing, so it’s refreshing to hear both your experiences.

@acuppatea thanks for that!! I rang them first thing Sunday and been waiting for a response, but just called again and they said they’d actually contact the lab and tell them to remove that part before they release them. So if they do follow through with that then great but if not, happy to find out now either way 🤣

I never knew this would be such a big decision for me or I definitely would have thought about it now! Now fingers crossed for the NIPT results!

Thanks again everyone 🥰

@Elbee23 come back and tell us the outcome please ☺️

Elbee23 · 09/05/2023 11:36

Update!!

So firstly, all came back low risk 😌

And then for Ultrasound Direct, they were brilliant and the gender was removed from the results. They also said 7–10 days and I received results in 8 days. So really great service from them and would definitely use them again!

Finding out the sex is a surprise either way - whether it's on paper beforehand or in the delivery room! Enjoy it!
