31w pg baby hiccuping after I eat

Hi there, I'm 31w pregnant and I've had awful heartburn/constipation/gas this week. It appears that everytime I eat (I'm very restricted to what I can have and it is not Gerd inducing foods) my baby hiccups after. Mostly, this is from a bigger meal like a bowl of vegetable soup with a slice of wholemeal bread, so not a massive meal but not a snack either.
I've spoken to two obgyn consultants who have just said it's fine as baby's movements are the same. I had a fetal heart monitor on yesterday as well and her movements/heart rate seemed fine. I can't find anything relating my heartburn/wind issues and foetal hiccups but it seems like they are connected. Has anyone else experienced this?

I didn't have the dietary issues, but my bub hiccuped all the time!! She was a hiccupy newborn too! Nothing to worry about, I found it quite reassuring when she was in tbh! Very cute when she was out. She's absolutely fine!

Mine Hiccuped too, it was a strange feeling.

Whyisitdarkalready · 15/04/2023 17:37

I can understand your worry. Just to say, my ds hiccupped loads later in the pregnancy, I didn't think it was anything to worry about I just found it reassuring!

Thank you for your replies. There was something on Google about foetal distress/cord issues and hiccups which is why I'm worrying so much... It feels like I eat, get heartburn, the baby hiccups and moves, I pass wind or burp. I've not found any correlation mentioned on the internet, but this is definitely the pattern I'm experiencing.

I had two super hiccupy babies and both were fine! One had reflux but the other didn’t so I don’t think there’s anything to it. I know it sounds daft but I miss that feeling so enjoy it if you can :)

I had 2 very hiccupy babies. Both had reflux but it's only this thread that's made me think it could be related now. I used to be reassured by hiccups. I enjoyed putting the remote on my belly and watching it wobble 😳

My little girl hiccuped loads and did as a newborn. The heartburn and gas is definitely just one of those pregnancy things especially last trimester.. as soon as I ate anything or lay on my back I had horrific heartburn x

Greenllama123 · 15/04/2023 21:01

I had awful heartburn and my baby had hiccups everyday in the womb in last trimester. She’s 5 months now and still hiccups daily 😂

NoIncomeTaxNoVAT · 15/04/2023 21:01

My DD hiccupped every single day when i was pregnant. She also had really bad reflux as an infant that went at 6month. As a nearly 2yr old, she still hiccups a lot though!

VintedoreBay · 15/04/2023 21:03

My first had hiccups to set your watch by, like clockwork! And then continued to get hiccups at the same time like clockwork after birth, too 🤭

CatNamedBob · 15/04/2023 21:20

My first had hiccups multiple times a day in the womb. It's normal as far as I know? He did have bad reflux as a baby.

nildesparandum · 15/04/2023 21:44

My DS2 hiccuped a lot before he was born.He is 50 now.In those days no one believed you if you told them so I stopped mentioning it.
Thankyou for these posts all of you.I now know I was not imagining it!

Cas112 · 15/04/2023 22:42

My baby hiccuped all the time whilst in my tummy then continued to do so once I had given birth.. health visitor had no worries.. now 7 months and hardly hiccups

SoCunningYouCanStickATailOnItAndCallItAFox · 15/04/2023 22:45

I'm in my 40's and my mum still talks about how much I hiccuped when she was pregnant... She nearly fell off a boat once apparently. Never grows old. 😁

Dewintergarden · 16/04/2023 11:10

Thanks for the replies. I think it is the frequency of the hiccups and that they follow every meal I eat which I'm concerned about due to the cord issues I've seen mentioned online. I'm going to book a private scan next week, so hopefully that will allay any of my worries.

You said in your first post that you've spoken to two professionals and they've said it's fine, so please try to take comfort from that. Maybe keep a diary of when you eat and when the hiccups happen, you may find it's a coincidence. Does baby hiccup at other times, other than when you eat? Maybe your baby will be more prone to wind or colic or reflux. Hope you get some reassurance from the scan. Good luck.

Dewintergarden · 16/04/2023 12:11

@Whyisitdarkalready yes, but neither of the consultants have checked me over physically which is why I'm still a bit concerned. I don't think I will be able to be scanned privately until Wednesday. Thank you for your well wishes! I will update the thread once I have my scan.

I've had a little google, and majority are all positive about the hiccuping. But I can hundred percent understand why those few articles which talk about hiccups being caused by a cord problem would have you worried. Could you phone your midwife and just explain how you are concerned? She might offer an extra appointment to reassure you. Lots of the articles seem to suggest that as long as baby is moving the same as usual, not less or significantly more, then hiccups are just baby getting ready to breathe. I do wish you the best at your scan, hope they can reassure you that all is well xxx
