Obstetric appointment at 34 weeks - bit confused!?

Hi all,

I have received a letter for an obstetric appointment at 34 weeks, I'm a bit confused as up until now my care has been all community midwife led and no consultant appointments, is it normal to have an obstetric consultant appointment at this stage??

Many thanks for any replies 😊

Are you over 35 or have gestational diabetes etc?

annlee3817 · 15/04/2023 07:19

Don't some trusts do another scan at around 34 weeks? Anything said at your booking in appointment that could affect birth?

Bananasinpjamas4567 · 15/04/2023 07:21

Were you overweight at your booking appointment?

SpideysMummy · 15/04/2023 07:23

Do you have a history of herpes? You’d usually be seen around then to prescribe acyclovir to take up until birth.

Or have you previously had a haemorrhage? A blood transfusion?

Ithurtsthebackofmyeyes · 15/04/2023 07:51

I had a growth scan at 34 weeks. And I wasn’t fat, didn’t have herpes, nor had I haemorrhaged before. It was just a normal scan in my trust.

No, under 35 and no diabetes or overweight etc

I was told my 20 week scan would be my last one unless I required growth scans later but my midwife measuring me has always been bang in the middle percentile

No (thankfully!). Also this is my first baby and no previous surgeries etc so no history of blood issues (apart from current pregnancy anaemia?)

Thank you, I'm hoping this is the case then although I would of thought for a scan the letter would of said ultrasound department rather than obstetric? Who knows lol

Oh have you asked for a C-section? Thinking back, I think that’s when I saw my consultant to discuss the op.

SpideysMummy · 15/04/2023 08:00

It could well be to do with the anaemia. How low is your hb?

CityKity · 15/04/2023 08:18

If it’s any help I’ve recently got a text reminder for my next ‘obstetrics’ appointment - but I know for a fact it’s just my usual midwife check in by the address, and the fact that we booked in that appointment together at the last one.
I’ve never had it referred to as an obstetrics appointment until now, so I was a bit confused for a second too. Any chance this is just a routine midwife check in too?

babynoname22 · 15/04/2023 08:21

Some trusts have started to introduce a scan at 34 weeks. It's very new.

Littlegoth · 15/04/2023 08:35

I would ask on Monday but otherwise don’t worry, like others have said some Trusts do this - I think it’s a good thing x

Rudens · 15/04/2023 09:08

Have you moved?
I had the same when I had moved in middle of my pregnancy. The consultant just wanted to check the notes and see if there was anything missed while I moved from one hospital to another.

Sallyh87 · 15/04/2023 11:19

Hi,I get a lot of scans in pregnancy and they are all entitled obstetrics appointments. I think that’s probably what it is.

Likethestarsabove547 · 15/04/2023 18:28

How bad is your anemia? I think that might be the cause and they just want to put a plan in place for delivery as it can sometimes be an issue. Definitely ring and ask on Monday that should shed some light hopefully
