Folic acid panic!

I’m an older mum and haven’t been taking my preconception vitamins as regularly as I should. Very annoyed with myself. Does anyone know how quickly it takes for folic acid to be in your system to prevent neural defects? I was considering ttc during my 2 week window in about 3 weeks time and wondering if this is long enough to have enough folic acid in my system but wondering if I should delay ttc for another month.

I think it's quite quick plus a lot of our food has folates. I have a slightly higher BMI so the midwife out me on higher dose folic after the booking in appointment at 8 weeks so in theory I was taking too little for those first 8 weeks, but I'm now 27 weeks and baby has no neural tube defects at all. I wouldn't worry too much about missing it in the conception stage and just start taking it now :)

Don’t panic! My pregnancy was a surprise so I hadn’t been taking anything. I started as soon as I got a BFP but I was also worried. My Dr said that in the developed world most people get enough in their normal diet anyway.

At your age take 5mg now and all through the pregnancy.

I’m sure you’ll be fine, even if you’ve been taking it sporadically that’s better than not at all. Just take it regularly now and for the first 12 weeks when you get pregnant.
I wouldn’t delay because of it.

Can’t imagine many people actually take pre conception vitamins? Just start with sling it if you’re concerned

what , of course you do unless it's a contraception failure.

I think most people who are obsessing enough about conception to be posting on the conception/pregnancy threads (myself included) are taking folic acid 😁
