Booking appointment not until 16 weeks

Good morning,

Just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this and if I’m being unreasonable to be a bit annoyed about it? My booking appointment won’t be until I am 16/17 weeks. Also no scan until after that. Seems a bit late doesn’t it? No appointments available within the health board before that apparently.

Not my first baby but I’m feeling pretty anxious about having to wait so long before I am seen by anyone. I’m likely going to need to be consultant led due to difficulties last time and I’m feeling like this is a very bad way to start! Currently 12 weeks so still have another 5 weeks to wait.

No that's pathetic there's no way it should be that late.

Sb86 · 14/04/2023 09:19

That can't be right surely?! Where do you live? You're supposed to have a dating scan anytime now! I would contact them again and demand to be seen, a mum to be needs reassurance no matter how many times you've been in this position before. Hope you get somewhere with it!

Namefonow · 14/04/2023 09:22

@Sb86 I’m near Glasgow so not exactly the middle of no where. Seems crazy to me. I called again yesterday and they suggested I went private but surely that can’t be right?! I know the NHS is struggling and I do have huge respect for them but this is a pretty crucial service I feel.

That's not okay, there's blood tests that need to be done by 11 weeks and the dating scan has to be done in a certain time frame to get accurate measurement for the Downs Syndrome screening.

Daisybee6 · 14/04/2023 09:24

Don't they need to do the screening tests before that? I'm not 100% sure though

violetskypurple · 14/04/2023 09:24

Can you contact PALS?

Tarantallegra · 14/04/2023 09:24

Call the scan department directly and make an appointment. I had to do that with both of my scans with my last pregnancy. I had been booked in so I was on record so it probably made it easier but it doesn't hurt to ask

Sb86 · 14/04/2023 09:28

I can't believe they've told you to go private!! There are checks that need to be done by certain gestation so they can't just be bypassing them. Do as above and ring scan dept direct.

Glitterstars · 14/04/2023 09:29

bloods And first scan need to be done before 14 weeks. Makes no sense to be that late. When you have your consultant appointment flag it with them and insist it is sooner

Namefonow · 14/04/2023 09:30

I hadn’t thought about contacting the scan department. That’s a great idea. I think I have fallen into the mentality of trust the NHS and everything will be fine but the more I think about it, the more I’m worried.

Yeah as @Glitterstars said I thought the scan and tests had to be done by 14 weeks. So sorry you have receiving this treatment. I also thought the booking appointments were supposed to be between 8 and 10 weeks.

I would call up again. Hope you manage to get an earlier appointment x

MrsBunnyEars · 14/04/2023 09:42

I’m now 37 weeks (in London) and I’ve had to chase for every single thing in my pregnancy. Totally different to my experience 3 years ago.

The care I’ve had has been very good, but I’ve had to fight for it which is terrible.

Agree. I thought was before 14 weeks, but either way needs to be done sooner then your appointment.

The booking appointment is usually separate from the scan though, so maybe the scan is going to be first? (Would be unusual).

Definitely keep chasing though.

Likethestarsabove547 · 14/04/2023 22:55

Yeah that's not right at all. Dating scans should be done before 14 weeks as PP have said. Echo you should ring the scan department and contact PALS.
Be careful with private scans like window to the womb etc because there's been lots of bad press about them recently for not being properly accredited. Unless they mean something else by private.

Gbuck · 15/04/2023 08:25

Hi, with my second I had my booking appointment round the 10 weeks, I didn’t have my first scan till 15 weeks, no matter how much I contacted people to try and get a earlier one there was no joy they were stretched and that was that. Your booking app does need to be done before then so they can get you in the system. i can’t see why they are leaving it so late, it can be done over the phone.
hope you get it sorted good luck

Namefonow · 21/04/2023 13:21

Well I finally managed to get earlier appointment! Booking appointment is tomorrow and scan is on Tuesday. So relieved! Maybe I will start believing I’m having another one now.

So happy for you @Namefonow 😊 hope all goes well x

tiredpuppymum · 21/04/2023 14:14

Please can you explain what happened?
What did you say and what was their explanation?

I'm horrified!

CaffeineFirstPlease · 21/04/2023 14:17

I have a 6 month old after a nearly 8 year gap.

High risk, consultant led pregnancy and I struggled to get majority of appointments.

My advice is to call and ask every time or you will be overlooked.
