Bleeding and cramping - early pregnancy unit can't see me for another 72 hours

Hey all,

I am about 6 and a half weeks pregnant. For the last 24 hours I've been experiencing cramping, and increasing spotting (including some small clots). I finally got through to my local EPAU and they can't see me until Monday afternoon.

This feels like a very long time to wait, and I am pretty anxious.

Any thoughts on whether I should:

a) wait it out
b) try another EPAU (am I allowed to do this?)
c) book in for a private scan (but they'd presumably have to refer me back to the EPAU anyway)

Would be really grateful to get some advice here. I have had a miscarriage in the past, but that was a missed miscarriage and I had surgical management, so I have no experience of having to go through the actual suffering of a miscarriage in 'real time' so I don't know what to expect. I should also add that I feel like my symptoms have lessened recently, so my gut feeling is that it's bad news....

Thanks so much in advance!

Sorry, in my anxiety I made a mistake in the title. They can't see me for another 96 hours (4 days).

Gosh I understand how tricky this is.

Putting my pragmatic work hat on, I would say that a scan isn’t going to change anything, if it is not good news or if it is good news.

IF it is a miscarriage then leaving it until Monday may mean that you pass the pregnancy by then and they can assess the endometrium for anything retained otherwise you would have to come back in 10 days or so if the sac is still there as it would be classed as uncertain viability.

As I said that’s a very pragmatic response and I completely understand that you just want to know either way. A private scan is an option but as you said, they’d be referring you on if they don’t see a baby with a heartbeat and the whole process above will start again potentially (as some trusts don’t accept private US reports).

I’ve no idea on whether you can try another EPU. worth a try if it’s something you can access?

I would personally wait it out as I know how frustrating/ vague early scans are and that they often don’t really help in management of a miscarriage that’s happening naturally but it’s easy for me to say just responding and not going through what you are.
Equally any of those options are feasible and women do all them all the time. If the bleeding gets extremely heavy then do make sure you are seen though.

Im sorry you’re going through this and sorry I can’t be more helpful.
