Scan - what's the earliest?

Currently trying to work out my dates.

I had unprotected sex over my fertile window in March however...

I had my period 11th - 17th March. Very all over the place, super heavy for a few days (had to get tablets to help ease the flow) then stopped for 3 days then a few days of just brown discharge on wiping.

I had a external scan done on the 17th to check for fibroids etc. It was clear. Lady said my uterus looked good and healthy and exactly right for my point in cycle.

I had sex once in April and it was outside my fertile window by 3 or 4 days. We used a condom. There was no breakage.

I'm now pregnant. I thought I was 4 weeks. However I'm now second guessing the possibility something was missed last month. I didn't do a pregnancy test last month as I assumed the scan would pick it up - but I vaguely remember being told that a early pregnancy is only picked up on internal scans. Would it still be possible to see something on a external scan at, what would be, 4ish weeks?

I had to have an early scan in my last pregnancy to rule out ectopic pregnancy. They wouldn't see me until I was 6/7 weeks pregnant as anything before is too early and a pregnancy could be missed.

And that's with an internal scan!

If you think you would have been maybe 4/5 weeks at the time of an external scan then I'd say there's a v low chance of it picking up a pregnancy. Not impossible but given it went what they were looking for I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was missed. That's based on what I was told having a scan at 6 weeks - basically don't be worried if we can't find anything its not a given.

I had an internal scan my first pregnancy at 5 weeks, they could only detect a yolk sac. Which showed a pregnancy but they needed to see more so rescheduled me a week later ( sadly I miscarried ) currently 7 weeks pregnant tomorrow and had a scan last week, which showed everything they needed to see including a strong little heart beat flickering away. Had a scan today, abdominal which again showed our little heart beat. I would book a private scan when you think you are 5 1/2 - 6 as can cause more worry and anxiety to go any sooner. I am currently on my 5th pregnancy so have been at the worry, anxiety stage so many times. Hoping this time round I get to hold my little bundle of joy ! Honestly try and just stay busy, keep your mind off it until the right time to hopefully see something at a scan. Sending thoughts and love your way !

Thank you for replying.

I am now wondering if I am 4 weeks or 8 weeks if it could have been missed on scan last month.

😳

Maybe try a clear blue digital weeks indicator test if you are more than 4 weeks it would show 3+ on the display x

OnNaturesCourse · 13/04/2023 16:49

Having looked at it I could be anything from 4w 4d to 8w 4d.

I got a CB weeks indicator and it's 3 weeks which I think would make me 5+ weeks?

Maybe I ovulated early.

If I tell the GP I have no idea about my dates what will they go by?

Hi OP, could you book a scan with a private place near you? This would then put your mind at ease whether it’s the 8 week pregnancy or a 4 week one. Most private places will do an external scan first, and if they can’t see anything or see enough they will do an internal scan. They aren’t as scary as they sound I promise

OnNaturesCourse · 13/04/2023 20:44

I could but I grudge paying the prices around my area especially as we aren't 100 % sure if we are continuing with the pregnancy just yet. (big surprise)

I will speak to the GP hopefully tomorrow or Monday and take their advice.

I think 3 weeks is 6+ on clear blue double check the side of the packet x

4 weeks on external scan probably no.... especially if they were not looking. The earliest you can see something is 5 weeks internally and that would be a dating scan to measure the yellow body and determine due date. You can have a scan now and see how things go and they should be able to date it. It's about £120 privately

Wednesday6 · 13/04/2023 21:55

Speak to the GP they might be able to offer the scan for free if you are hesitant about keeping it you should absolutely know how many weeks. Maybe they can do a hcg blood test to see your levels if it's an early pregnancy. Good luck with either decision!

Thank you everyone.

I'll contact the GP and go from there I think.
