Work trip to Mexico City at 6 weeks pregnant

Hi there, just looking for some advice / reassurance and thoughts on a bit of a predicament I have found myself in.

I just found out I’m pregnant with my second (unplanned though very much wanted) and I unfortunately have a work trip booked to Mexico City for the end of the month when I’ll be 6. 5 /7 weeks pregnant. We’ll be in a good hotel and largely in doors / in safe spaces as it’s work not play. I don’t really have a choice about going as am relatively new into the role.

My thoughts:

  • I have done a bit of research and can see that zika is a risk but a v low one at the moment + we’re at high altitude so that lowers the risk further. Will get myself some very strong insect repellent - any recommendations?
  • I will be very careful with food and only drink bottled water
  • Do I need to be concerned about the flight itself?

I’m going to have an early scan day before I go to check it’s at least in the right place and looking ok so far. And I am chatting to my GP today about it and any other precautions I should take.

Is there anything I have missed or should be thinking about??

thanks!

@CaliCat2306 In theory it should be fine but for the flight I would recommend you use a good mask like FFP2 to avoid catching covid or even the flu.

I think you should be fine with the precautions you're taking - I'm also assuming you're fully vaccinated against Covid? I love Mexico City, it's one of my favourite places and assuming you're working for someone like one of the big banks, it will be very safe.

Oh, and can you travel in business class? Will make it easier to move around etc.

Beware of ice cubes in drinks. They're likely to be made with tap water

You’re taking great precautions, definitely check the best insect repellant for pregnancy. I did similar trips through pregnancy and was just very careful with food and drink etc.

My experience was that most Mexicans are paranoid about the water, especially in Mexico City and wouldn't dream of drinking the water or making ice cubes with it. They were appalled that I used tap water to brush my teeth.

For the flight itself... I had a long haul flight to North America for work at 7 weeks pregnant and my midwife just recommended staying really well hydrated, standing up and walking around about once an hour, and wearing super sexy compression socks! She said there's absolutely no increased risk of miscarriage or anything going wrong with the pregnancy, just a slightly increased risk of DVT but should be absolutely fine with precautions

You’ll be fine. Mexico City is an amazing place.
