Hi all... just found out I'm pregnant at 42.
In a state of shock... kids are 15,13,12 and hadn't planned on a fourth. We are quite excited about it but also terrified! Had three missed miscarriages when I was younger (2 before children and 1 after my youngest child)

Do older mums get more scans / earlier check-ups or anything? And I have two VBs followed by an elective section. Will I be told how to have this one or will there be room for discussion?

Any advice welcome!

Hi, I don't have any experience as an older mum but didn't want to read and run. Congratulations on your pregnancy, I hope it all goes well. You can elect for a caesarian for non-medical reasons so even if they feel you could give birth vaginally, but you don't want to, you can elect to have a c-section regardless. They just usually make you have an appt to discuss the risks of a c-section (which you're obviously already aware of) and if you're still happy to proceed, you shouldn't be refused. As far as I'm aware, there are no extra scans or checks for older mums unless you're deemed a high risk pregnancy for any other reason but that would be ascertained by your midwife at your booking appt x

Thank you!
Trying not to get too excited as have had 3 mc before and I believe the risks are higher when older. Goodness knows how my teens / tweens will react!!

No, not unless deemed high risk pregnancy.

Good luck with it all and congratulations on your geriatric pregnancy! (I hate that term, I'm due my second as a geriatric mother)

Congratulations. I had my second last August at 41, I had some extra growth scans due to my age, I was also put on a daily dose of aspirin from 12 weeks. Induced at 39 weeks due to age, excess fluid and some other factors, had it been just age they would have induced at ,40 weeks.

Congratulations!

Different hospitals have different approaches for ‘geriatric’ mothers, and it will also depend on other risk factors such as your weight, blood pressure and overall health

You won’t be allowed any sort of hormonal induction because of your precious c-section though, so if you go overdue, you’ll have to have another section, I think

Thanks all!
Having gone from state of shock I'm now worrying in case it doesn't stick! 🙄

@toomanyeastereggsinmyhouse Also just found out I'm pregnant at 41 and wasn't offered any early scan or more tests. My first booking appt is actually at week 12 which I feel is a bit late..
