Pregnant naturally after IVF

Hello, we had IVF to have our now 6 month old and we feel extremely blessed that it worked first time after NHS treatment (in my area we get one round). Whilst we do have one frozen embryo, I am hoping to try 'naturally' as well and wondered if anyone has fallen pregnant after IVF? I am 36 and we have unexplained infertility. Thank you for sharing any stories. 😊

Yes, I'm a GP and this happens not infrequently! good luck - consider ovulation sticks to time intercourse.

Hey.
Just sharing my story as not sure where else to put myself on this board! We had DD in 2018 after ovulation induction, started trying for a sibling in Jan 2020 and no luck at all, did an IVF cycle in Jun 2021 and we ended up with 5 embryos. Over the next 18 months I had them all transferred at various intervals (all single transfers) and none of them implanted. Totally devastated. Was planning another round in summer while we did a few lifestyle things to try to improve chances and I fell pregnant naturally. I'm now 7+2, terrified and in shock but also really very happy. I know a lot of people that have fallen naturally after having IVF for their first. Sending you the very best of luck xx

A colleague had ivf and said they were all told at the meetings to make sure they used contraception if they didn't want another straight away. Seems to happen.

I have 2 friends who had their babies through IVF, both with recognised factors for infertility, fall pregnant unexpectedly within 6m of giving birth! Not trying (but not preventing) and rarely having sex. It’s worth a try!

My friend had NINE rounds of IVF. Successful on the 9th.

She then conceived naturally with a 6 month old!

All of us utterly gobsmacked.

I know someone who didn't use contraception after having an IVF baby - not necessary as she was infertile, right?

Wrong.

Her doctor called it rusty gate syndrome. A rusty gate is really difficult to open but once you open it the first time it's much easier.

WildAloofRebel · 04/04/2023 12:56

Ah I know lots of people this has happened to :) good luck!

Yes i did. FET failed and we called it a day. Still tested every month as old habits die hard. Have a 4 year age gap

HistoryFanatic · 04/04/2023 14:06

Yeah I did in February when my 2nd IVF baby just turned one. I think we have PCO and slightly slow swimmers. Unfortunately I had a miscarriage but hoping it wasn't the only natural pregnancy chance we have. We only DTD once as well.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 04/04/2023 14:17

Everyone I know who successfully underwent IVF ended up with at least one more child than they actually intended. Some through multiple (IVF) births but quite a few through “I’m infertile so don’t need to use contraception….. oops!”

Surelyitscoffeetime · 04/04/2023 14:35

It happened to us and two of my friends. One actually ended up with 5 children!

Blossom45 · 04/04/2023 14:59

Yep - I had a failed round of IVF, only one viable embryo which didn’t stick. Also unexplained infertility. Due to the low number of eggs collected and embryos created we were going to move onto ICSI, but personal circumstances meant that we had to put it on hold. A year later we had a surprise natural pregnancy and a healthy baby.

MujeresLibres · 04/04/2023 17:03

Yes. I had IVF twice, both failed. Took time off trying to see if an ovarian cyst would resolve (it did) and got pregnant naturally. We tried for baby number 2 with IVF again but no joy. Really lucky with our miracle baby, DH has slow swimmers and I have one blocked tube (later partly removed) and one damaged tube, so really against the odds.

I conceived my son no problem but then my husband got cancer and the chemo totally wiped out his sperm so we knew we’d need ivf to have a second child (we’d frozen sperm just in case). First ivf failed but have 6 embryos in the freezer. Waited for next period ahead of starting frozen embryo transfer but it never came and I’d got pregnant naturally. Sadly ended in miscarriage at 6 weeks. So was awaiting my cycle to regulate again to start embryo transfer after next period. It never came - fell pregnant naturally again immediately after miscarriage. Very flukey considering sperm count is still incredibly low and the numbers would qualify immediate ivf/icsi referral, but it can happen. Now 9.5weeks and 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Given the odds for our ivf working were decent due to age and egg and (frozen) sperm health, and the odds of conceiving naturally with under 2mil sperm are crazy low, it makes no sense to me!

Good friend tried for almost 10 years, Findlay conceived twins after nth round of IVF... then had a surprise baby a few years later aged 40! Incredible

Hippomumma · 04/04/2023 21:54

Unexplained infertility here after trying for 4 years after MMC. Two rounds of IVF with second ending with a chemical. 2 months later we were waiting on date for FET and got our wonderful surprise positive naturally! He’s snoring next to me at 16 months now and baby 2 conceived naturally is due in 3 months. Miracles do happen!

Smogtopia · 04/04/2023 21:56

My IVF nurse told me (whilst prepping me for EC) - the minute you get the all clear at 6 weeks check up after having a baby you need to go again we see it work all the time!

Betsyboo87 · 05/04/2023 11:50

Yes happened to us. Ok vet 3yrs trying naturally and then conceived DS via IVF. We were told to use contraception but didn’t really believe it. Just after he turned 2 I realised I was late and there was a positive test. Huge shock.

Happycroc · 05/04/2023 15:02

Yes, me. ICSI baby born 2020. Failed FET confirmed 7/7/23 (hcg was 4 so classed as chemical pregnancy). BFP 9/8/23 having only had sex twice that month! 39 weeks pregnant now 😊

artimesiasfootsteps · 05/04/2023 16:49

My friend had 2 failed rounds of IVF then is now 13 weeks pregnant with an accident (they weren’t actively trying as didn’t think they could conceive naturally)
