Early Scan Confusion

hi all,

Went for a six week reassurance scan yesterday, and was fairly confident my dates were accurate from my LMP to put me at 6+4.

The sonographer said I was actually 5+4, but he could see a embryo in the sac with a flicker heartbeat. My question is, how likely are his dates right, or is there a chance that the embryo should be six weeks and is growing small/something wrong, as I’ve seen most people don’t see anything on a five week scan, particularly a flicker heartbeat?

Could you have ovulated later? It's not really accurate to date from LMP. I wouldn't stress, a flicker heartbeat is positive news.

As above, you probably just ovulated later than you thought. Dating from LMP is very approximate and it's why dates are often changed at the 12 week dating scan. A heartbeat is good news ❤️ congratulations!

It's such tiny measurements at your stage, try not to worry. With DD1 if that first scan was correct I was pregnant for 45 weeks with her. DD2 I was put forward a week at the 12 weeks scan, but I knew when she'd been conceived. Try not to worry.

It's totally normal that early because it's so so small and hard to get accurate measurements. Both pregnancies I was a week out at early scans even though I knew my dates and the dates matched up again by the 12 week scan

You would need to know when you ovulated exactly, and then when you implanted to get an exact number of weeks. Going by LMP is just a rough calculation. Your dates will change officially at 12 weeks scan.

Everything is so tiny it's really hard to get accurate measurements. I went for a scan at 6+3 and measured 5+5 with a heartbeat. By the time I was 8+6 I was measuring 8+3 so not as far behind. Everything is likely fine, try not to worry.

With my youngest I went for an early scan and they put me at 5+5 and could just about make out the flicker of a heartbeat. They booked me in again in 2 weeks time just to check everything was progressing as it should. It was 2 weeks to the day and they put me at 8+2 at this appt. They’re so small it’s difficult to get 100% accurate measurements. But all was fine with my youngest. Good luck 🤍

I had this then by my 12 week scan she was measuring nearly a week ahead!

Congratulations and wishing you a healthy pregnancy x
