Clear liquid from nipples - 17 weeks

Hello!

I've noticed this evening a tiny tiny amount of clear liquid leaking from both my nipples.

I know you can start to produce colostrum before birth from what I've read online but it's clear (not yellow at all) and isn't it too early for this to be happening?

Should I speak to my midwife tomorrow or is this normal?

Im 17 and a half weeks pregnant, this is my first pregnancy!

I've noticed the past few days my nipples seriously stinging too, particularly when I'm cold.

Thanks 😊

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Colostrum is usually clear at the beginning and goes gold after birth in my experience of having two babies.

Sounds very normal to me. The stinging could be normal but if actually painful shooting sensation it could be vasospasm.. often linked to being cold.

What would you want your midwife to do?

SacreBleeurgh · 26/03/2023 02:36

Totally, completely and utterly normal OP, don’t stress.

@Flittingaboutagain @SacreBleeurgh Thank you both for your responses! That's definitely reassured me 😊 I'm not normally too much of a worrier but I didn't realise it could happen so soon.

@WimbourneWasps give me advice on whether this is normal or not? First time pregnancy here, it's all very new to me! I don't understand the point of your response to be honest 😂

Yes mine started about 21weeks, only a minor bit and not every night but many nights I would have wet spots on my T-shirt. Now I have to sleep in a bra and the next morning or by the next night the bra has dried white bits. I’m 34weeks, first baby. I didn’t expect it either.

You're not very nice. Reported.

@WimbourneWasps
If I was in OPs shoes I'd probably be wondering whether to be concerned because women are usually told to report any unusual breast changes, including discharge, in case it's cancer. "Is this normal at this stage of pregnancy" is a fair question, especially given that if it's not, most women would want to seek further advice to rule out anything sinister. Not everyone knows everything about pregnancy or what should happen to their body during (if they did, midwives would largely be redundant)!

@isitaline97 what you're experiencing sounds within the parameters of normal. Some women start noticeably producing colostrum early (you) and some don't (me, two pregnancies, never 'leaked' from my breasts until babies arrived)!

If you're at all concerned (or just want to know) about anything, do mention it to your midwife, it's exactly what they're there for.

@Blue2020 thanks for your response and all the best to you and your baby ☺️

@Poppins2016 Thank you for that. I went to bed last night feeling like a total idiot for asking this after that other response!
That exactly what I thought though I'm sure any midwife would be happy just to reassure me or point me in the right direction.

Glad to know all seems normal, thanks ladies!

@JacobsCrackersCheeseFogg Thanks for reporting, I'm glad I didn't get to her reply!
