Sweetners/Erythritol in Pregnancy?

There's not many studies on sweetners - mainly erythritol during pregnancy. Prior to conception I kept to a no sugar low carb diet and supplement erythritol with home bakes and my cup of tea.

I've found out this weekend I'm pregnant (ttc for 3 years so really hoping it's sticky!!)

Can I safely carry on using erythritol? Does anyone have any experience of using during pregnancy and no issues?

I'm conscious my bmi is deemed high and therefore going to have gestational diabetes scared into me as soon as I see a Midwife so where possible want to avoid sugar to maintain as healthy weight as possible during pregnancy.

Thank you!

I have been using erythritol, xylitol and Stevia for years as on keto/low carb. Now 16 weeks pregnant and continue to use it without problem. I'm not going to start using sugar and go high carb just because I'm pregnant, in fact I would balloon if I changed long established habits.

@Liveafr thats really useful thank you! so it seems its fine to use, but can cause larger BMI in baby long term potentially. But also to prevent allergy to still have some sugar, which is fine for me I can limit sugar and still have a bit.

@Moni81 I totally agree I would balloon if eating lots of carbs and sugar! I will relax a bit and calorie count to keep at a good weight though, I am very conscious that as my BMI is just under 34 I will be scared of gestational diabetes so want to control carbs and sugar as best as possible. Is this your first pregnancy? or have you had another pregnancy doing low carb/keto? Has your midwife said anything about staying on this diet during pregnancy? I am still very early days so not seen a midwife yet, but I have continued to have erythritol, and kept my diet low carb and then worried I maybe shouldnt!

@Journey2022 it's my third pregnancy after over 10 years break lol. With my previous pregnancies I even didn't know what it is low carb and yes I put on weight, not like massively but I became chubby size 14. With this pregnancy at 16 weeks I am consistent size 8-10 but in maternity clothes with room for belly. What I can say my belly grew significantly, which is to be expected with cnsecutive pregnancies and my age 42, not same muscles lol. However I haven't noticed getting bigger all over which is good and hope it stays this way. I'm more of low carb than keto right now and luckily my cravings are not for unhealthy sweet stuff so far. I mentioned my food choices to midwife, she didn't say anything. I guess as long as scale and blood results looks ok, they are not bothered. Tomorrow is my 16 weeks first proper midwife check up so will see how things goes.
