Underwired bras in first trimester?

Last time round I dutifully switched to soft bras, but can't really remember how crucial it is at the early stage. I am 12 weeks now and bursting out of all my bras - tempted to go underwired as usual until a lot later. Are there any proven reasons not to?

I think there are some medical reasons not to, but in my case they were agony! As soon as I swapped it felt soooo much better.

I expect someone else will know why!

During my last pregnancy I was told that underwired bras are fine to wear as long as they fit properly!!

MrsBadger · 11/02/2008 18:16

so long as they fit properly (this is crucial) you can wear underwires as long as you like - I wore them right up till I gave birth but changed size about 4 times during pg.
Poorly-fitting wired bras can compress breast tissue with all sorts of nasty consequences.

Fine as long as they fit - I wore them until I gave birth (was a 32H at the time and non wired bras didn't hold them up properly at all!)

I have been to bravissimo and had new bras 3 times so far in this pregnancy (am now 34 weeks). A bit pricey, but much better than wearing those awful, unflattering, non-underwired ones in my opinion.

I cheated - got measured properly then sneaked off to buy them somewhere cheaper (Tesco )

God I just can't even look at an underwired bra anymore, my boobs have literally exploded and I actually need a bolder holder to keep them looking pert so I'm under no allusions that a bit of stringy wire would do absolutely nothing anyway!!

Hello - Bra expert lady here! ( o ) ( o )

(credentials: 2 years fitting women at Bravissimo & currently fit ladies at mothercare)

I wore underwires through all of my pregnancy until I felt the wires was uncomfortable on my bump. There is apparently NO conclusive information that wires will cause problems.

HOWEVER Wearing the incorrect sized bra may well do.
If you want to continue wearing underwires throughout your pregnancy, and many women do. Make sure it is the correct size.

Basically, as soon as you see a wire mark on the side of your boob its the wrong size. Your wire marks at the side should always press onto the skin behind the breast tissue, and not on it.

Even if you decide to wear soft cups, still get your size checked correctly. I have so many women in who are wearing totally the wrong size. When you have the right sized bra, wired or soft cup, you will get the correct support needed.

rant over! Goodluck x

I wore underwire thru both pgs - had to as I started out at 34C & finished at 40F! Without the underwire they'd have been down to my KNEES!

ja9 · 11/02/2008 19:56

i wore underwired through both of pregnancies too. i just can't be doing with w-i-d-e boobs

I am 24 weeks and have stuck to the underwire so far. Have quite a big bust (38DD) and always sleep with a bra at night as well. But underwire has become uncomfortable at night so today I tried this on and it is incredibly comfortable if hideously ugly. It really did give great support, much better than my underwired ones, so I have bought one so I don't sag to my knees! I can't bear to give up proper bras in the daytime though, I rely on them to give me a proper shape!
