Baby measuring small 8th centile at 20 week scan

Hi everyone,

This is my first post on here and I am worried sick. Currently pregnant with DC2 and went to our 20 week scan yesterday to be told little one is on the 8th centile for growth (small across all HC, AC and FL). At our 12 week scan baby was on 42nd centile so quite a drop. We've been referred to fetal medicine but I'm just so anxious that there isn't really any wiggle room if baby was to slow down growth even further :(

I was wondering if anyone else has been in a similar position and what the outcome was?

Thanks so much in advance x

Hi OP

I'm pregnant with twins and they've never surpassed the 10th centile (I have scans every 2 weeks at FMU because they're identical twins). My latest scan they were both on 1st centile.

It is okay for your baby to be small - consultants aren't remotely concerned about mine. As long as they continue to grow & the dopplers are fine (cord flow measurements etc, they will check them at your FMU scan)

Hi Alice thank you so much for your response, it means a lot. Congratulations on your lovely twins! How many weeks are you if you don't mind me asking? :-)

That's really reassuring, I suppose I am just worried that it might be something wrong with my placenta but worrying won't change the outcome. I'll just have to wait and see at my fetal medicine scan on Thurs.

Wishing you a very healthy and happy rest of pregnancy x

I'm 31 weeks!
The FMU will do a full growth scan and should put you right at ease, but I honestly wouldn't worry, although I appreciate it is hard not to!

If there's any issues re. Restricted growth they tend to deliver a bit earlier.

Hi, I’ve been told the same at my 20 week scan however they don’t seem worried and have just referred me for growth scans from 28 weeks . How did your FMU scan go ?

CatsOnTheChair · 28/05/2023 20:42

How big are you and DH?
If you are both 6' plus, I'd be more worried than if you are both 5' and petite.
Equally, I'd be more concerned about the drop than the actual centile, but in-utero measurements aren't always acurate

No idea in-utero, but DS1 was born on 25th centile, dropped to 9th, and now, as a teen, hovers between 5th and 9th, eats more than (obese) me, and qualified for the country cross country championships where he was near the back of the pack.

Scans can be really inaccurate. My 20 week scan baby was below 10th but every other scan was 30th -50th and baby born around 50th. Let them do a few scans and build up an average.

Hi thank you all for your responses :-) really appreciate it. Our first born was 8lb at birth hence we were worried about this one tracking small.

I thought I'd jump on and update everyone that I've had baby now and blessed that she arrived safely at 39 weeks. We ended up having growth scans every 2 weeks and the measurements each time varied between 4th to 12th percentile. When she measured 4th percentile they did mention potential induction at 35 weeks if things turned south but luckily the placenta blood flow measured fine each time.

Hope this gives hope to anyone in a similar situation. Take care and thank you for all the replies ❤️

Hiya @Lwizzer . I'm currently in exactly the same boat as you. 8th Centile at 20 weeks. Feel very anxious about it

Well I had a 36 week growth scan today. She's absolutely shot up, AC is 96th centile- EFW is 7lb and I'm having a test for gestational diabetes. Oh how things have changed!!!
