Rushed and painful 20 week scan?

My twenty week scan today was over and done with in under fifteen minutes. Is this normal? Also when the sonographer was pressing into my stomach it was incredibly painful. I didn't say anything, but it was still sore for a couple of hours after. Again, I'm not sure if this is normal?

Overall, it was a disappointing experience as the sonographer was so abrupt.

@Afj sometimes they do press hard but I haven’t had a 20 weeks scan for 8 years as not reached that stage with this one yet. They did press quite hard at my 12 weeks scan though and felt a bit sore the day after. If you’re worried then I would call your midwife tomorrow. It does seem rushed though as my 20 weeks scan appointment letter says that it will take around 30 minutes

They allow 30 minutes for an appointment to allow time incase anything flags up that needs more investigation or if baby is in an awkward position otherwise all appointments get pushed back if yours runs over. It doesn’t mean it takes the full 30 minutes. I think mine took about 10 minutes as everything was nice and straightforward. although it’s lovely for you to see baby on screen they are there to do a job and have other people waiting so it is done quickly.

They do often need to push into your stomach to get the measurements and it can be uncomfortable although with individual pain thresholds some people may find this painful. It’ll ease in the next day or two.

If you wanted to have something a bit more relaxed maybe have a look at paying for a private scan. Highly recommend a 4D scan if you can afford it. Getting to see all the facial features was really special and they take their time a lot more.
