Hi everyone,

During your 16 week appointment do you get another scan or listen to the baby's heartbeat?

How long does this appointment usually take? I'm not sure if my DH should take the morning off to come with me or if it is more like a check up.

there isn’t another scan until 20 weeks. Otherwise depends on your trust. Some still do phone appointments at 16 weeks, just to check in and go over any blood test results from booking in and compare with scan. Some places will have you in and check urine/blood pressure etc. some may use the Doppler at 16 weeks but many won’t until a later appointment as it can cause unnecessary stress if the heartbeat can’t be found.

You don't get another scan, no. They also don't tend to listen to the heartbeat unless you ask. It can be hard to find this early and can cause unnecessary worry if they can't find it, so it's generally if you ask and have a nice midwife then they will. I got to hear the heartbeat at our 16 week appt.

It's a quick appointment really. At mine they tested my urine sample, checked my blood pressure, did the carbon monoxide test where you blow into a tube. That was about it. She just asked if I'd felt any movement yet and how I was feeling. Then listened the the heartbeat at the end. I probably wasn't in there any longer than 10 mins xx

Thank you @Twoinapod @rach971 for that. It's my first so everything is new.

I got to listen to the heartbeat at 16 weeks. The midwife did explain that it might not always be possible this early tho.

I got to hear the Doppler at my 16 week appointment, and I definitely didn't request it, as I didn't know it was a thing! Mostly they ask how you are, and check urine and bloods (don't forget your pot of wee)!
