Early Scan - Pregnancy of Unknown Location

Hi all. Had my early scan today and I’ve been left really confused, and over thinking everything like crazy! I had a transvaginal scan and I’ve been told I have a pregnancy of unknown location; which could either mean the pregnancy is too early, it’s ectopic, or I’ve miscarried. But none of those options really make sense.

I had my last proper period starting 29th Dec which would make me around 8 weeks. I did have what I thought at the time was another period from the 2nd Feb, however we didn’t do any baby making after that. Knowing what I know now, that could have been a miscarriage, but I’ve just done a pregnancy test with really diluted urine and it came back a strong positive, I’ve also had increasing morning sickness. Seems a long time to still have such strong symptoms?

Given the dates of when we would have conceived, it’s not an option that the pregnancy was too early to see. Having said that the guy who did the scan didn’t fill us with confidence…although surely a transvaginal scan would have shown something pretty obviously by 8 weeks?

Then the other option is ectopic, again no pains/other symptoms. And he couldn’t see anything anywhere else on the scan.
I’m praying that it was a dodgey scan and all is actually well, but I’m not disillusioned in that I know there’s still chance I could have miscarried.

Will be referred to the EPU tomorrow but I guess it’s going to be blood tests and a very stressful wait.

Has anyone else had similar experiences?

You must be so stressed, I find some private scan places really unhelpful so you’re just left guessing! I have heard of people going to epu and they find something on the scan which they didn’t at the private scan clinic, although by 8 weeks you should be able to see baby and heartbeat. When was your first positive test? Could the 2nd feb of been implantation bleeding instead maybe? Xx

Thank you! Yes I wish I’d never flipping paid for one, I’m known for being impatient so I’m getting a bit of an “I told you so” response. I am thinking now that maybe I just ovulated later, as my periods are very irregular. Maybe I’m just not as far along as I thought. Fingers crossed!

Do you have an update op? X

Going through the same thing now at 7 weeks, also private scan, sonogropher a bit sketchy and not filling me with confidence and so vague about it all. Am finding more info on what to expect by trawling through forums. Which is really shitty because the not knowing is the worst part but there seems to be little empathy for this diagnosis. What I’ve gathered is I’ve probably miscarried but my body hasn’t reacted yet, I will likely have to have blood tests and a lot of waiting and stress and maybe some injections to resolve it. Just astonished at how unhelpful and unsupportive private clinic have been
