Will yoga help or hinder pelvic girdle pain?

Hi there, I am about four months pregnant and experiencing some pelvic girdle pain. Nothing really to worry about, but I want to do some maternity yoga in the hope it will improve it / strengthen the muscles there. Some things I read online say it can help, but others say to avoid yoga as it can make the pain worse! Any advice from others who have been there? Thanks

It is suggested that doing yoga during pregnancy helps females to feel calmer and safe. But I think it is better to do it with the guidance of a professional yoga teacher.

If you attend a pregnancy yoga class and tell the teacher about your PGP, they'll be able to advise you and adapt some of the moves so you're not aggravating the pain.

It also depends where you're experiencing pain? If you're looking to strengthen muscles to reduce the pain, specific exercises advised by a physio will be much more targeted at helping to improve what you're experiencing. Hope you feel better soon.

I've been doing some of the pregnancy yoga on youtube led by Katy Appleton and found it really good. She makes suggestions for how to vary the exercises depending on how far along you are, and a lot of them are stretches aimed at relieving all the pregnancy aches!

I think you’d have to avoid some yoga moves. This site might help: thepogp.co.uk/Resources/112/pregnancy_related_pelvic_girdle_pain_for_mothers_to_be_and_new_mothers
