When I told my employer I was pregnant, the first thing my Line Manager asked me was my pregnancy planned? Then they complained they would struggle to find maternity cover. Anyone else expirence a similar reaction?

Bearing in mind I have my own home, I'm 31 and have a long-term term stable partner.

Thanks 😊

Short answer, people are often idiots!

I haven’t had this but I know friends who have in work. I think sometimes depending on your job, they almost think you should have project planned this so that the programme of work doesn’t get affected. Given them two years notice or something before conception 😂

I've been asked this with all three pregnancies, it's never bothered me as I don't think the people asking ment any harm just a random question people like to ask pregnant women. However, very unprofessional coming from your line manager, as if your expected to put of having a family as it may inconvenience their company 🙄

Hugely unprofessional of your manager a) to ask that and b) to then say that about finding a replacement.

Please don't let this bother you OP you're perfectly within your right to have a child whenever you want. If your employer can't organise themselves around it that's their problem not yours.

In any case I think when you're not married people just don't see it coming and then blurt it out. (Exactly the same happened to me, but with my friends not my.manager!!) it's annoying but harmless I think. I also got 'ohhh lockdown baby' which annoys me. My daughter was very much wanted and planned and not the result of a bit of lockdown boredom! Grrr
