Early pregnancy spotting, a thread for anyone going through this

Hi all, I’m 4w+3 days. I first tested positive last Monday and had some brown CM for a couple of days, this passed and today I’ve noticed it’s back when I wipe.

I called the GP just to get some advice and it wasn’t a great conversation. Obviously EPU won’t see me until 6 weeks and the GP literally said ‘it might be go away but it might be that the pregnancy is not working and you need to prepare that bleeding may increase’.

I didn’t want false hope from them but the conversation just didn’t go how I expected, and the hardest part is being in this limbo where literally no healthcare professional can help at this stage.

If anyone is going through similar or who has previously then please feel free to join this thread. I feel like I need a space to just talk about how this Limbo feels x

Hello, didn't want to read and run. I entirely understand this limbo

I experienced brown discharge twice in early pregnancy. Once at 7 weeks (was on holiday and couldn't see EPU until home) and again at 11 weeks...

I had the same responses at the 7 week experience, ride it out, see how it goes etc and it's terrifying

BUT

I'm just here to let you know that brown discharge usually means old blood... nothing was actively bleeding inside my womb/baby etc, and I'm now 28 weeks pregnant 👌🏼 although terrifying, it is quite common, and doesn't always mean the worst.

Hope everything goes swimmingly and it's just sensitivity like me!

JJ2023 · 13/02/2023 16:54

@H1994 thanks very much for responding, this is exactly why I wanted to put this on here, to just get the frustration of it all out!

It’s literally barely anything and hasn’t changed or increased since this morning. That call with the GP completely rattled me however I am feeling better and less emotional now and literally just going to take each day as it comes, it’s all I can do!

So glad to hear everything has been good for you, and hope you are enjoying your pregnancy!

@JJ2023 the fact that it's slight and isn't increasing is really good! It can mean a lot of things that aren't harmless to you or baby, so yeah it's not fun not knowing but wait it out... I hope you get some other people on here to reassure and support!

JJ2023 · 13/02/2023 16:59

@H1994 thank you very much, I really do appreciate you sharing your experience!

I do have a problem I need help with. I had sex the 6 and a couple days later I had cramps , felt a little nauseated but no period. I’m 7 days late today. this morning i had cramping that was worse then the first time, when I went to the bath room there was some blood , bright color but no clots so I put a pad on. Couple hours went by nothing Now when I peed and wipe I got a Brown color with a little bet of blood. I have taken a test but it’s only been 6 days . I was told it was to early to test right now that it could take 21 days for my body to register what do you think. I take medicine but stopped them all just incase. I have never had a kid before so I don’t know if that’s normal or not. what dose this sound like to you.

DCP31415 · 13/02/2023 17:26

Hiya, I’m in a really similar boat currently. I’m around 6 weeks now and I’ve had brown spotting pretty much daily for about 2 weeks now along with some period like cramps. It’s mainly when I wipe with a little bit in my underwear here and there. It’s never really increased or decreased which is strange to me. I usually get spotting at the start and end of my periods and I’m clinging to hope that I’m just prone to holding onto old blood so maybe this is still from implantation/changes happening in there.
i completely understand the limbo feeling - I’m lucky that my GP referred me to the EPU straight away and I’m booked in with them this week but I’m absolutely terrified of hearing a bad outcome when it comes to it

JJ2023 · 13/02/2023 17:28

Hi @Elizabethp26 did you take FRER or clearblue early detection? As they can detect 6 days before your missed period and if you are 7 days late then hopefully you’d get an accurate result.

JJ2023 I did take one but it was negative but it’s only been 7 days since I had sex.

Elizabethp26 · 13/02/2023 17:32

I took first blue test

Hi @DCP31415 thank you for sharing. I hope your appointment at EPU goes well this week, completely understand you are worried, I would be the exact same. I know some people who generally spotted throughout pregnancy but it is just so hard when you don’t know what is going on in there!

@JJ2023 just to reassure you OP, I had brown spotting every time I wiped from 3+4 (the day i tested positive) until about 6+2. It was incredibly anxiety inducing! Not out of the woods yet as still only 9+6 but just to reassure you !

I did end up getting a scan at 5+3 at the EPAU - the spotting plus the fact i had some pain on one side meant they scanned to rule out ectopic

JJ2023 · 13/02/2023 18:44

@Lhdale that must have been so difficult to go through, thanks for sharing and for the reassurance, glad to hear all ok with you x

@JJ2023 this sounds almost identical to what I’m experiencing right now! I rarely read about anyone who has had prolonged spotting and/or with some pain.
just out of interest (and of course only if you don’t mind sharing), did they offer any explanation as to what may have caused it?

sommeliermama · 13/02/2023 20:40

I had cramps from weeks 5-7, a heavy-ish bleed in week 6 and then brown blood when I wiped a few times throughout week 7. Thankfully everything was ok and the private scans I booked showed baby and a heartbeat.

After the heavy bleed in week 6 I went to the Emergency Gynaecological Unit where they did a physical examination and then an ultrasound two days later. Was never told where the bleeding came from but they didn't see any blood in the uterus. I'm now 13+3.

Any type of blood is really scary especially when they're accompanied by cramps! It's so hard not to worry but they likely won't scan you until you're 6 weeks. Sending lots of hope your way @JJ2023

Thank you @sommeliermama so glad to hear you’re well!

@JJ2023 no they didn’t, we’ll they kept just saying implantation bleeding but I didn’t quite buy that because it went on for so long. But I read that if it’s brown it’s most likely the womb expelling old blood. My periods were incredibly short so I though maybe I had quite a bit of old blood that was being shed as my womb built up a better lining?!

JJ2023 · 14/02/2023 07:32

@DCP31415 the response above was to your message/question.

@Lhdale that’s interesting I also have short cycles. I had no spotting overnight and so far nothing with FMU, I will have to just wait this out!

Hello! I had this at 8 weeks ish! I ended up booking a private scan as I was so worried!

It ended up being a subchorionic hematoma which is actually very common in pregnancy and comes with brown blood which is old blood!

31 weeks now 😘

JJ2023 · 14/02/2023 08:32

@xttcbabyno1x thank you for sharing!
provided all is ok we have a private scan booked for the 8 week mark x

Hey guys, according to my flo app I’m 6 weeks 4 days. I’ve had light pink spotting (just on wiping none on pad) for the last 2 weeks, one occasion of one wipe of red and then nothing. I had a reassurance scan last Friday and they could only see my gestational sac and no yolk and apparently the sac is measuring small. Im still spotting on and off and I’m back to be rescanned in the morning. My gut is telling me it’s going to be a blighted ovum and my brain is driving me bonkers and I can’t sleep

JJ2023 · 25/02/2023 11:27

Hi @Sleepyhead31 sorry to hear you’re going through this, I have everything crossed for you. I hope your scan went well. Take care x

Hi OP, I thought I’d share my story. I had really early spotting( probably about 6 weeks or so) similar to coffee granules. I was told this can be caused by implantation. I also had implantation cramps which were sometimes really painful, if I sneezed, etc.

At 10 weeks I started bleeding bright red blood for a few hours and then it stopped. I phoned the EPU in a frenzy and they told me they couldn’t scan me for almost a week. I then phoned round as many private clinics as I could to get a last minute appt and was advised that EPU are always so reluctant to scan because bleeding in early pregnancy is sooo common, it’s normally is no cause for concern, and if it is, there is nothing they can do to stop it. 🥴 thankfully, baby was fine and they couldn’t find a cause for the bleeding. I was always told brown blood isn’t a concern, only red blood, yet they couldn’t have been less concerned about my red blood!

I’m now 18+5 and haven’t had any bleeding since 🤗

JJ2023 · 25/02/2023 14:00

Thanks everyone for sharing your stories and providing support it’s really appreciated.

Unfortunately my pregnancy ended early following the spotting I posted about. I’ve been going through the motions, feelings and anxieties. But my cycle is starting to reset so we will stay hopeful for our 🌈 baby xx
