Miscarriage, how soon can you try again?

I think I am having a miscarriage at six weeks pregnant. My pregnancy tests are still positive but I have been having period like bleeding for the past couple of days.

If it is a miscarriage, how long does it take to clear and how soon can I try again?
Has anyone had similar and got pregnant soon after? How long did it take?

I got pregnant the next month after my first miscarriage however that pregnancy also sadly ended up in miscarriage. Now pregnant again, still early days but things seem to be progressing ok. Conceived the second cycle after that second miscarriage. Hope this helps!

BerryTowner · 10/02/2023 17:15

@HJA87
That's very positive!
I'm sorry you had two miscarriages in a row. Three pregnancies back to back says you're very fertile though, which is great news.

Ok this gives me hope, I think I will start OPKs as soon as I stop bleeding then as I usually ovulate very soon after my period.

I hope this pregnancy sticks for you, good luck.

Thank you! I was very down about the miscarriages and thought I would never get to this point but clearly there is hope! If you are having a miscarriage, the most likely cause is a chromosomal abnormality and I’ve been told that the fact that your body recognised it and dealt with in naturally is also a sign that your reproductive health is in good shape. I know that it’s difficult to see any positives when you’re going through it though so sending you hugs.

I would also still do another pregnancy test in a week or so because bleeding doesn’t alway mean miscarriage. I’ve had bleeding (ranging from heavy bleeding to spotting) for several weeks during this pregnancy due to a subchioronic hematoma.

I had a missed miscarriage at 12 weeks and purposely waited one cycle (and was advised to) for my period to return back to normal.

We got pregnant again the next cycle but it was a chemical pregnancy. Two cycles later and I’m pregnant again (I’m nearly 12 weeks now). I was told you’re supposedly more fertile after a miscarriage, which has seemed to be true for me!

But like @HJA87 said, bleeding doesn’t necessarily mean miscarriage! Have you contacted your EPU?

Blue2020 · 10/02/2023 18:23

As the pp have said, if you haven’t done so please contact your EPAU where they can hopefully offer a scan and tell you what is happening. For me I had to go through my doctor for a referral to them. Explain you have pain/are bleeding and could you be seen by the early pregnancy assessment unit.

I had a mmc last spring which was long winded and I kept bleeding until I opted for surgery. We started trying again once the bleeding had stopped from the surgery (about a week later). I took a pregnancy test to confirm it had finally ended, then we just dtd a few times that first cycle, not properly trying but also not avoiding it. From cycle 2 I used opk and bbt to make sure we were at least covering the window.

I conceived three cycles/months after the surgery, and I’m now 27weeks along.

Bleeding doesn’t always mean miscarriage so fingers crossed it’s not in your case. I had 2 back to back early miscarriages at 5-6 weeks but got really faint nearly negative tests before starting to bleed. I then got pregnant again the 3rd cycle in a row and am now 12 weeks

LouLouLabby · 11/02/2023 06:44

I'm so sorry you might be going through a miscarriage, I really hope it is not but if so, I had one in January at 12 weeks so can understand your pain and also feeling of wanting to try again asap. I was advised from the hospital to wait 2 weeks after the bleeding stopped, to ensure the risk of infection was down and ideally to wait until my next period to try again so dates could be tracked. I bled for 3 weeks and only waited 1 week after the bleeding stopped to try again as I was far too impatient and I did an ovulation test which confirmed ovulation (at this point 4 weeks after the miscarriage itself) so am glad I started trying again then otherwise I would have missed that ovulation and had to wait another month.

BerryTowner · 11/02/2023 10:09

Thanks for the information, no I haven't contacted anyone. I will go to the doctor for a referral to get a scan as soon as possible, thank you for the advice.

I took another pregnancy test this morning and it was still positive, but it's fainter than the last one I took 😔 which was a really dark line, and there are little tiny bits of clotted blood in the blood now.

I'm sorry for the other posters who have also had pregnancy losses. Thank you for sharing your experience and advice.

I will give an update when I get the scan.

I'm sorry about your miscarriage and your chemical. That is super exciting that you're pregnant again and get pregnant quickly! Congratulations.

I'm sorry to hear about the long drawn out mmc and surgery. But happy for you that you are now 27 weeks!
So many positive stories, this makes me feel much happier. Thank you for sharing.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Two back to back miscarriages sounds tough. I also had a pregnancy test now that was fainter than the last one which was really really dark.

I hope I can get pregnant again asap, hearing all these stories gives me hope.

@BerryTowner if you’re now 6 weeks could you contact 111 and get a referral to EPU for a scan or contact your EPU? In my area I have to contact GP or 111 first my midwife said for a referral but some people can just contact their EPU. Mine were both between 5-6 weeks so I didn’t contact as they won’t do anything before 6 weeks but they may check you.

I really hope it’s going to be ok for you I know it’s really not nice. Apparently you’re more fertile after a miscarriage and I definitely was getting pregnant 3 cycles in a row! This was after not getting pregnant until cycle 5 in the first place so don’t think I’m generally as fertile as that.

look after yourself 💕

@BerryTowner hey op, im in the exact same situation as you. Stuck in limbo not knowing whether this is a MC or not. No advice just solidarity x

BerryTowner · 14/02/2023 19:57

It was a miscarriage. I got a scan and they couldn't see anything there. Thanks for your advice and help.

They said I will probably ovulate in another four to six weeks.

allgoodthings84 · 14/02/2023 20:21

@BerryTowner I’m so sorry to hear that 😞. The 2 I lost at 5 weeks only delayed my ovulation by 1 day then next one by 3 days (if I counted the bleed as a period) so ovulated just over 2 weeks after starting to bleed (CD15 for one and CD17 for the other).

LouLouLabby · 15/02/2023 06:14

I'm so sorry to hear that and for your loss. I ovulated exactly 4 weeks after my miscarriage first started but that was only 1 week after the bleeding stopped as I bled for 3 weeks. I kept thinking it would be around 4 weeks after the bleeding stopped, which is what I was advised and had read online, but I was being impatient and started doing ovulation tests a couple days after the bleeding stopped, which I'm glad I did as I wasn't expecting to ovulate so soon and would have missed it.
