6 week viability scan

Is it a good idea? I'm 5 weeks pregnant with an IVF baby and every waking moment is consumed with worry. I have a 7 week scan with my clinic and I've booked a private 6 week scan. But I've just read that you can't always detect a heartbeat at 6 weeks and if that happens I'll obviously spend the following week in a state of uncontrollable panic! I'm finding it very difficult thinking that I might have to go through all the IVF treatment again. This was our second and final embryo.

Any words of wisdom gratefully received 🙂

I wouldn't do it if I was you, I had a scan at 6 weeks and no heartbeat was visible - baby was totally fine so it was just an unnecessary worry!

7 weeks will come quickly! Good luck x

Hi lovely!

I’m currently 6+5 with our little IVF miracle. I also am really struggling feeling anxious that something will happen but found comfort in knowing it is out of my control.

Our first scan isn’t until 8 weeks, so a little over a week to go. I didn’t want to have an early scan and give myself more worry if they couldn’t hear a heartbeat. I know it’s torture, but if it would make you feel better. Just do it🤍✨ I know how hard it is and I think it’s important at this stage to do what’s best for you.

Ive managed to keep busy with work and that’s helped but the days are dragging and the closer I get to scan day the more anxious I feel lol x

I wouldn’t have had a scan at 6 weeks unless I was bleeding or something. I had a private scan at 9 weeks as knew by then things should be a bit more accurate (I had 2 early losses). At 6 weeks it can measure behind or not show what you’re expecting quite yet and sometimes nothing is wrong but you have to go back 1-2 weeks later for another. If this happens you will likely worry massively. I have seen lots of people on here see heartbeats at 6 weeks and lots who don’t but baby is fine. If there’s nothing to suggest anything is wrong I would wait until your 7 weeks one.

Thank you so much everyone. I think on balance I'll cancel - I know myself and if they can't see a heartbeat at 6 weeks my anxiety will skyrocket.

@Izzie94x Congratulations to you ♥️ It's bloody hard isn't it. Amazing to see those two lines after years of trying and treatment, but terrifying to think it could all go wrong. It is actually helpful to think it's completely out of our control. I will try and distract myself with that thought and with work! All the luck in the world to you for a happy and healthy pregnancy and baby. Xx

I had one at 6 weeks and it was fine in terms of seeing a heartbeat but only measured 5+2 but I was so sure of my dates. It caused a lot of worry that the baby wasn’t growing as it should but then a scan at 8 weeks showed my dates bang on, at such an early gestation there is a wide margin for error. I think in future pregnancies I will wait until 8 weeks!

@Wife2b Thank you, wise words. I really don't need the extra worry so I will heed your advice!

I'm currently 7+5; I've never had an early private scan and this is my third IVF pregnancy. I just saw it as a waste of money, unless you have a specific medical reason for it. Obviously I attend all the NHS scans, but I just know that I am still pregnant so I'm holding on for 12 weeks. TBH I don't find that hard. I'm desperate to know the sex, and quite keen for pregnancy to be over (lol), but although I love the scans I can wait for them too.

You did the right thing cancelling. I’ve read so many posts here from women panicked that there was no heartbeat and then days later they update to say they had a new scan and all is fine. All that anxiety just because they had a scan too early.

Thank you @IVFbeenverylucky and @ThomasinaLivesHere 🧡

I would not recommend it, I had an awful experience at early scan thinking I was 6 +3 week, she couldn't see anything. Went somewhere else 7 weeks +1 and they had said I look 5 weeks, still couldn't see anything though. They booked me in for a free scan in a weeks time. It's been the worst week ever of worry. I was fine until I went there.
