hi ladies hope someone can shed some light on what might be happing but for a few weeks now ive had pain in my back im only 29 weeks. the pains come and go but are worst around late afternoon and night time.so i asked the midwife last week if it could be the babys poistion as this is all i could think of and she said it cant get near ur ribs as theres organs and things in the way..just wondering if this could be the cause of something else.

I had this pain too when i was pregnant and it was awful. It also radiated round to the front right at the top of the bump. Not gonna be that much help to you but i went to the docs about it and they just said it was to do with the position of the baby. also because it was so bad went to a chiropractor and he did ease the pain somewhat.

i have had this. am 37 weeks now - prob had it more about a month of two again. its like a painful little fluttering? my baby's been positioned head down for ages now, and i always assumed she was just kicking. i know a woman at my yoga gets the same pain in ribs and associates it with anxiety cause it feels so strange

Hi rdk

This sounds similar to pain I had at about the same stage! I am fine now (40+0). I was lucky that I was already going to the physio regularly for something else and I mentioned it to him. Like babyinacorner he managed to "do a few moves" and ease it for me.

Physio said it was because my bra was not supportive enough (). I had gone up to from a 32H to "no longer able to buy bras as can't wear underwire" so was wearing sport bras. I switched to "slightly too small but more supportive soft cup bras" and the pain went within a few days!!

Not saying it is the same, but maybe worth a try?

I have the same problem - thought it was cos baby is head down so feet are up there and pushing at my ribs? Hee hee I like to imagine baby positioned like a bat with little toes hooked onto my ribs!

It's agony when I am trying to sleep though as both sides of my ribs hurt, so no matter what side I lie on I am in pain. And it also really makes my upper back hurt too cos of all the pressure... so my sympathies to all of you suffering as well.

I have had this since I was about 25 weeks. The consultant said to me last week that often women get pain from their gall bladder being squashed - I think this can radiate from the front right side round to the back (it does for me). Mine is also worst at night.

I have been to the docs (thinking I had all kinds of things, including pre-eclampsia), but he said I was fine. It is worth you seeing your doctor though, just to rule things out.

I haven't thought about the chiropractor though, and might give that a try.

Check your symptoms with gall bladder pain, and if that is the case, reduce fat from your diet.

I used to get pain under my right ribs that radiated towards my back about 6 hours after eating fatty food - would last for between 2 and 6 hours. Thought it was indigestion at first, but rennie had no effect.

If it is your gall bladder, there ain't much a doctor can do while you're pregnant - your best course of action is to cut out fatty food from your diet. If you still get acute pain then def go see your doctor. Don't be too afraid to ask for pain relief though - it is safe to take codeine / co-codamol up to 2 days before the baby is born, and this was the only thing I found to knock the pain.
