To vitamin K or not to Vitamin K…

Hey ladies, did anyone decline their vitamin K shots or if not entirely decline then opt for oral drops ? Any stories or it being good or bad ? As always there is pretty contradictory articles online about its risks vs benefits with ingredients and reactions. I’ve said no in my birthing plan but think I might change my mind if there’s little risk. Midwives has said better to get it.

No idea why you wouldn’t want bit K. It’s a VERY good idea

fucksbizzz · 26/01/2023 10:56

You'd be irresponsible not to tbh.

Emmamoo89 · 26/01/2023 10:56

Don't say no to it. It's important

GabrielAgreste · 26/01/2023 10:57

Yes, get the shot! There’s a strong evidence base for it being beneficial & poor evidence for any harm being caused.

DaisyChain16 · 26/01/2023 10:57

What are your reasons for not wanting it? If you can't articulate any I think that tells you everything you need to know.

R0ckets · 26/01/2023 10:58

Not sure what contradictory articles you're reading but they sound like scaremongering nonsense. It would be very irresponsible to not have it.

FlyOnTheWall89 · 26/01/2023 11:02

@KLMmumma the oral drops taste disgusting and your baby will spit most of it out. Do the shot.

WandaWonder · 26/01/2023 11:05

Does it cause covid?

No!!! That was not a real question, but I have no idea why on earth someone would say no

Putyourfeckingsockson · 26/01/2023 11:07

Please don’t say no to the injection, your baby needs it before they leave. A small injury could result in catastrophic bleeding for your little one because their blood won’t clot like an adult without the vitamin K injection. If you take the drops you will have to come back to the hospital for them which means you are taking that risk whilst you wait for the drops and as above, baby will most likely spit the drops out and not get as much benefit.

Sucessinthenewyear · 26/01/2023 11:08

Get it injected.

If you bf too it difficult enough to remember the vitamin D drop. You really don’t want to add more to do during the new born phase.

I said no and my baby is alive and well

OhMaria2 · 26/01/2023 11:09

Did anyone in this thread read up at all on why you might want to decline before commenting?

OP, I did and decided to get the shot . Originally we were going to go for drops, but after a traumatic birth decided just to get it over with.
Baby didn't even flinch.

FoxtrotSkarloey · 26/01/2023 11:10

The guidance is overwhelmingly clear to have it, but if you've seen something which concerns you then you are absolutely right as a parent to check it out.

Please can you link what's bothering you so people can help more?

(FWIW, both of mine had it).

havingabubble · 26/01/2023 11:10

I found this book really helpful when considering this option.

We were going to opt for the drops however baby was early and birth was traumatic for baby and me so opted for the shot.

I didn't think the risk of baby developing VKDB was worth the risk, however small. I certainly don't think you should say a blanket no, if you have a traumatic birth my understanding is the risk of VKDB is even higher.

That's not accurate either and is just as much scaremongering as saying that babies shouldn't take vitamin K. A very very small minority of babies would ever have an issue with clotting, it's not a universal condition by any means. The difficulty is that you won't know if your baby needs it until it's too late.

HoppingPavlova · 26/01/2023 11:11

Why would you decline this? What do you see as the risk?

And @KLMmumma don't be made to feel bad about wanting to make an informed decision rather than blindly saying yes. Most of those making comments have probably done no research whatsoever. Congratulations on your pregnancy and enjoy every moment of your little bundle

Twizbe · 26/01/2023 11:18

I took the injection because it was a one and done.

Didn't fancy having to arrange for a second oral dose.

Worldgonecrazy · 26/01/2023 11:20

I chose drops, got them very easily and daughter took them with no issue at all.

The problem is though that most aren't doing 'research'. They just see something that contradicts the current medical advice and jump on it because it suits the current populist idea that we don't need experts nor can we trust in medical professionals.

I certainly read about vitamin k before I had my babies but nothing I know nor could find out convinced me not having it was better than having it.

MaverickGooseGoose · 26/01/2023 11:24

Why wouldn't you get it? Genuine question?
