To vitamin K or not to Vitamin K…

Hey ladies, did anyone decline their vitamin K shots or if not entirely decline then opt for oral drops ? Any stories or it being good or bad ? As always there is pretty contradictory articles online about its risks vs benefits with ingredients and reactions. I’ve said no in my birthing plan but think I might change my mind if there’s little risk. Midwives has said better to get it.

And @KLMmumma don't be made to feel bad about wanting to make an informed decision rather than blindly saying yes. Most of those making comments have probably done no research whatsoever. Congratulations on your pregnancy and enjoy every moment of your little bundle

Nobody has done research on this. Apart from the people who conducted the actual research.

Googling is not research.

Incredible that people are still this stupid.

Ok, think what you like. 😂

Well it is disingenuous though. You've basically come onto the thread and said we'll some studies say it might cause cancer with no evidence to back up such scaremongering claims. I could have come on and said some nonsensical rubbish too if there is no requirement to back up what is said.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 27/01/2023 09:16

@Tekkentime Why would you bring up something as emotionally charged as childhood cancer if you have nothing to back it up? I mean people think all kinds of crazy things I don’t see the point in mentioning it unless you agree with it.

I don't care about what you think at all.

Because someone asked where the notion comes from so I told them.

Or clearly what any parent trying to make a reasonable choice thinks either or what the parents of children going through cancer treatment think. You clearly don't think much at all to be honest.

I however think it's important to point out when people are spouting unsubstantiated rubbish.

I wish Mumsnet would do something about the misinformation on here with regards to things like this. It’s not a difference of opinion it’s just lying to scare people. Posters who do it should be banned in my opinion.

DuckDuckNo · 27/01/2023 09:30

But it won't be an "informed" decision though. She did not go to medical school, she has no idea of the science and the actual data behind the recommendations, she won't understand the whole concepts behind them. And that's OK! Neither do I! I never went to medical school either! That's why I listen to the people who are actually informed, instead of googling stuff I can't really contextualise.

Agreed. It's not a differing viewpoint it's just out and out lies designed to scare and worry parents.

I don't mind if someone has a difference in opinion but I do draw the line at people just coming along spouting unfounded bullshit as though it's true when it's sole purpose is to worry parents.

A 2 minute Google academics search shows the findings you mention were disproven by later research

ChilliBandit · 27/01/2023 09:32

@Sublimeursula - I have too but sadly from experience MN let them stand. I just hope no mothers see it and decide not to protect their newborn.

I appreciate your response and link. Again I never said if I agreed or not, I was responding to the poster who genuinely asked why some people question it.

Benefits outweigh the risks by far

@KLMmumma this is a great read: evidencebasedbirth.com/evidence-for-the-vitamin-k-shot-in-newborns/

FWIW when I was pregnant I was not at all keen on the idea of my precious baby being welcomed to the world with an injection. Surely Mother Nature would provide him with everything he needs? But then we had a horrific protracted labour which ended in a fairly brutal emergency section. It was about as far from a 'natural' experience has it would be possible to get. If left to Mother Nature neither of us would have survived. So by that point I was more than happy to accept vitamin K, and specifically asked for the injection rather than the drops (at that time the drops were the standard mode of vitamin K delivery at that hospital). He had it during his first breastfeed and didn't even flinch.
Btw one of the reasons I opted for the injection, apart from knowing that my baby had just had a physically traumatic entry to the world, is that I work in microbiome research, and was not keen on an anything but colostrum entering my baby's gastrointestinal tract unless absolutely necessary. So even though the oral dose seems less invasive on the surface, I felt there was disruption to the development of his microbiome, and therefore his immune system etc.

We did oral drops.

havingabubble · 27/01/2023 09:59

@MissTrip82, I read and recommended a book on the topic written by a doctor...hardly googling or stupid.
