Nipple piercings and pregnancy

Hi, been looking online for info but not found any guidance from the NHS on this, I was wondering if any midwives on here or people who have had advice could help?

I’ve had one nipple pierced for 5 years now so it’s well healed. I’m about 5 weeks pregnant with my first and a bit panicky about little things like this and have been advised by someone I know that I need to take it out through the duration of the pregnancy?

Everything I’ve seen online says it can stay in unless it’s causing discomfort or irritation, and that it’s best to take it out for breastfeeding due to choking hazard.

what NHS advice have people received regarding this please? I’m worried about doing something wrong and will probably take it out anyway just in case but it’s something that I like how it looks so in this time of mad hormones and my body changing (even at this early point) I kind of wanted to have it for a few more weeks!

thanks in advance

I'm 32 weeks pregnant and have both my nipples pierced. I will take them out once I've given birth but until then 😄 x

I haven't had any issues at all with having mine pierced, maybe a bit more sensitive? But completely manageable xx

You're only 5 weeks, you still have time. Don't panic! If it feels fine and comfortable for you, keep it in. Just make sure your able to remove it if you plan to breastfeed, when the time comes. Tbh you might want to take it out soon anyways as your boobs get bigger, could start to feel uncomfortable.
