well you understand the pain better, so I suppose that makes it less painful.

Difficult to say, you know how you forget the pain after you've got your little bundle of gorgeousness.

But, if it helps, with dd1 I had gas & air, pethidene, epidural and still screamed blue murder.

With dd2 I had a teensy bit of gas & air then decided that I didn't like the way it made me feel so made do without.

Ds was an ecs so never actually laboured with him.

Celery · 06/02/2008 08:15

no, but atleast you know what to expect. Although that made it worse somehow! Every birth is different. My second birth was less painful than my first, but my third was more painful than the other two. sorry!

goingfor3 · 06/02/2008 08:16

Mine was half the time 2 1/2 hours and but more intense, the oushing stage was easier and I didn't need any stitches the second time round.

warthog · 06/02/2008 08:34

according to my mil, her no. 3 popped out after 2.5 hours and wasn't painful

she said the same thing about no. 1 before i gave birth. then afterwards admitted it was a load of tosh

One thing I wish I knew before having number was that the after pains were terrible, I really hadn't expected that as I don't remeber having any with dd1.

My 2nd labour was 50 minutes long and i wasn't having painful contractions for all of it.
Hence dd2 was born without medical assistance at home.

So yes they are quicker.

The afterpains were very painful too.

PetitFilou1 · 06/02/2008 12:55

Nope it was the same but a lot faster and more intense. You get through it though

God knows what my third will be like, my midwife helpfully said third births can be a bit of a wild card

PiggyPenguin · 06/02/2008 13:00

My second was a lot shorter although still 8 hours (don't ask about the first!) I didn't get any after pains and I only had gas and air. It was much easier and I went home from the hospital 3 hours after she was born.

Honest!

Beauregard · 06/02/2008 13:01

I also found that afterwards i felt great 2nd time,1st time felt like a bus had hit me.

I was shopping in Sainsburys the next day 2nd time round.

gemmiegoatlegs · 06/02/2008 13:03

i remember the transition stage being very scary with no 2 and saying i couldn't do it, but the labour was a lot shorter, 3 hrs from first contraction to birth and i was home about 8 hours later. i didn't find afterpains any worse tho.

Tutter · 06/02/2008 13:04

No.

With my first i had a silent labour no contraction until i pushed her out. I woke up at 39wks bleeding, got to the hospital and was already 9cm had her in 4 hours.

DD2 had contractions for 4hrs everyday for 3 weeks and then was induced at 41wks as was only 1cm dilated, water broken manually then drip had her within 4hours but VERY PAINFUL.

warthog · 06/02/2008 16:41

ok, thanks. would rather know the truth so i can prepare myself!

Hmm sorry -
faster - yes
less painful - no - for me same amount of pain squashed into shorter period of time.

HOWEVER I loved it and would do it again tomorrow - no pain relief either time.

claireybee · 06/02/2008 16:55

DC1-no niggles etc. Labour started with waters breaking, she was born 7 hours later. Remember contactions being bearable as long as I kept moving but the crowning/birth being awful
DC2. NIggles/on off contractions for 3 days. Established labour 4.5 hours, waters didn't break and the contractions were really painful with loads of pressure. Crowning felt about the same but the rest of actual birth less painful and quicker. Altogether though the labour was more painful second time round. And the afterpains were like labour all over again everytime I fed ds for the first week-hadn't had any with dd so that was a shock!
