8 weeks with painful cramping around bowel movements and gas

This is such an odd thing....

I've had morning sickness so I'm obviously not eating so great but now I have these really painful cramps. They feel like strong uterine period cramps but they are also in my back.. if I try ignore them they won't go away. The only solution is for me to go to the toilet and just sit there for like 10 to 30 minutes.

Sometimes I'll let out some puffs of gas and the cramps will subside. Sometimes I will do a few very tiny poops. Sometimes I will have a regular sized bowel movement (soft not hard) but it all takes ages to happen. The bowel movements all have some mucus in them.

The cramps don't stop immediately after I've passed gas or pooped. I have to sit down and relax for a while after and they eventually go away.

I've noticed they are now more frequent throughout the day and night and was wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them?

If yes, what did you do to stop it?

I had these in my first trimester - in fact it was this symptom that led me to find out I was pregnant in the first place! I had also bought IBS/laxatives too as I couldn't understand where this pain was coming from but did a preg test first by chance...

Im afraid I don't have an answer for you, except that pre-pregnancy I have definitely suffered from digestive issues (constipation/bloating) and it seemed like the change in hormones exacerbated it all. I noticed that particularly pizza or gluten heavy things made me particularly bad. I avoided those foods for a while and gradually tried little bits once my stomach settled into second trimester.

This was my one major illness with pregnancy, no vomiting etc but severe stomach cramps that at times felt period-like but never blood.

@loopyloutoo thanks for the reply.

So it got better in the second trimester for you?

What did you do during the first? Did heat or tea or anything help at all?

Having similar symptoms at 8 weeks. I also have had intermittent digestive issues and stomach pains most of my adult life and I agree that pregnancy has made them worse.

I have not found a way to stop it but I do recommend a beanbag and/or a hammock. I have both and find lying in them can relieve the pain quite a lot.

Just really trying to avoid any trigger foods (pizza) and being close to a loo, unfortunately. Definitely hot water bottles and a bath helped but yes, it did definitely subside in the second trimester! Back a bit now in the third but then that's just all over discomfort Grin

I am in the same boat i am 8 weeks 1 day today and my belly hurts but as soon i pass wind or go to the toilet it goes away, btw my gas is very smelly lol

xogossipgirlxo · 20/01/2023 09:19

I was really bloated in first trimester.

J1290 · 21/01/2023 22:35

Yep all above plus bloating
settled around 14 weeks...

Spinner12345 · 22/01/2023 20:01

I had similar and have IBS. I found not eating very much helped but that made me nauseous and I lost weight so not ideal. All I can really say is it does get better!

TeeEmm · 25/01/2023 17:55

I have these symptoms right now, I'm 8 weeks pregnant and this has started when I was 5 weeks. I have to lie down too for the cramps to go away. Did you ever figure out what this was?
