Bump well under 3rd centile

Hello all.

Feeling shocked and devastated tonight. Midwife measured my bump today and it's showing well under 3rd centile! She was obviously concerned and I have a scan tomorrow afternoon. I am a skinny person; pretty much bump and limbs. Still wasn't expecting things to be as bad as this. I've struggled with my eating due to nausea and reflux and I do have a history of anorexia. At 20 week scan everything measured fine. I desperately want my baby to be okay.

Hi, my bump was off the chart small last week at 26 weeks. Got a growth scan Monday and was so anxious something was wrong but baby is bang on 50% for weight.

Bump measurements have lost all credibility fir me. Please try not to worry, growth scan likely to be fine.

When I went back to the midwife and asked why it was so off she had no explanation

I really hope this is the case. My mind is whirring with possibilities. I really don't see how I can eat anymore in a day!!

I had this with my first, wasn't even measuring on the chart I was so small, sent for growth scan and everything was fine they measured me in 10th percentile at the scan and she was born in the 25th, perfectly healthy. I was told at the scan that my bump was small because I'm small and they wouldn't expect a woman my size to have a large baby. Try not to worry (I know that's easier said than done) even if baby is small at the growth scan it doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong, my second was born in 3rd percentile and is perfectly healthy, some babies are just small, also measuring bump with a measuring tape is not very accurate.

Please don't worry! Sometimes we measure people, refer for a scan and then baby is actually measuring really well. It's not a particularly accurate way for us to measure, it's just currently the best we can do. Just be extra cautious with movements and seek a check up if concernedSmile fingers crossed the scan goes well for you!Flowers

Have come across this with me and a friend. Both babies are now strapping 27 year olds. The tape isn't a very accurate measure in my opinion. Try not to worry but noting your eating history - do keep going on the good diet. You don't have to eat for two and it sounds like you're doing well.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. I wasn't expecting a big baby, but this has definitely come as a shock. More so because everything was bang on the money at 20 weeks. I can't wait for tomorrow afternoon when I can find out more. He does feel very low, whether or not this makes a difference I don't know.

Soooo....

I've gone from way under the 3rd centile to the 90th centile! Now questions being asked as to way I'm having a big baby! Literally all my weight gain seems to have gone to baby 😅

I am a skinny person but for some reason bump was massive! So early on!!! Healthy baby was born 6 lb 14. Healthy and thriving 6 year old now. I have arfids so eating well was a massive worry for me too.

The baby will take what it needs xx

FlyOnTheWall89 · 20/01/2023 06:28

@solosunflower I had this - bump measuring under the 5th percentile, sent for growth scan and baby is average size / weight for gestation, if not a little above average.

Thumberline · 20/01/2023 18:28

@solosunflower i had exactly the same situation with my DD I’m naturally tiny frame 5ft1 and around 42kg naturally and my bump measured small, baby measured over 90th centile on scan so they sent me for a GTT which came back fine. In the next scan she measured 50th centile and maintained that until the end. The midwife didn’t measure me again after the first time so it was all scans. Chances are your baby is fine 💕

solosunflower · 20/01/2023 21:21

I've got to have a GTT next week. I'm wondering about that because I have a massive sweet tooth! Hopefully all will be fine!

Please don’t worry OP. I’ve measured very small in all my pregnancies and I’ve had very healthy weight babies. I just seem to have tiny bumps.

Good luck with the GTT test!

Henbags · 20/01/2023 21:32

Bump measurements are complete nonsense! I was measuring a month behind and was rushed in for a scan next day and baby was absolutely fine, just hiding! If the scan is fine then that’s the most important thing.
