Hello

I've just accepted a new job last week, today I've found out I'm 2/3 weeks pregnant. What do I do or how is the best way to handle this. I've handed in my notice and my current job but I honestly don't know what is best to do.

I've looked on the government website and it's look like I won't be entitled to SMP but will be entitled to maternity allowance. Can I just have some advice please this was all very unexpected

Is the new job permanent?
Is there any probationary period?

If it's not permanent I'd retract my notice and stay at my current job.
If there's a probationary period in the new job I would also retract and stay at my old job.

If it's permanent with no probationary period I think I would research their policies on flexible working after maternity- example do you want to go back part time- will they adhere to this?

Look at your companies maternity policy is it good? Is it worth staying for?

Ask your self which will make you more anxious? Staying at your current job or taking on a new role?

Your current employer doesn't have to accept a retraction of notice.

Do you want to stay at your current place? Do you qualify for enhanced maternity there?

New place can't fire you or withdraw the job offer or fail you through probation because of maternity status. There's no reason to think you wouldn't be able to work for them for the next 8 months and return after maternity leave.

Maternity allowance is same rate as SMP, just paid through DWP rather than employer.

It can feel awkward telling an employer, but you could end up working for them for years afterwards. These things happen.
