Cyst (s?) in pregnancy - I forgot to get the sonographer to check them - can I wait 8 weeks?

After having bad cramps I went for a scan at 10 + 6 and the sonographer found one (I think 2 but for some reason I cannot remember for the life of me if it was 2 or just 1) cyst, and I can feel it quite alot stabbing every so often, but I totally forgot about asking at the 12 week scan ( at 12 +6). It was the sonographer who was assisting the one I had last time and I think she was very newly trained so may have forgotten about checking other things... or isn't it important? It was the quickest scan I have ever had, just length and nuchal fold and out again, but if it isn't important I don't want to go pestering for another scan. I do obviously have one in about 8 weeks. DO I just leave it? I don't see MW until after the 20 week scan either. Sorry to waffle on! Thanks x

ladyofwaffle - do you have the cysts or does your "bump"? did the sonographer say where they were eg ovary?

xx

I think i would ring your midwife if I was you just to check. Only saying because with my first pregnancy they found two cysts on my ovarys (most are normal so dont want to panic you) but one of mine kept growing till it was around 22cm wide and I had to have it removed. I had the same type pain you did.

Although sharp stabbing paind are most probably stretching thats going on in there and cysts on ovarys in preg are normal they provied the hormones they told me as long as they dont get too big!

Did the last ladt have your notes? Hopefully she did and she knew to check

Oh, they are in my ovary. I'll ring MW tomorrow about it, probably be told to wait until 20 week scan. I am kicking myself that I forgot!

dont leave it if you are in pain. i had a large ovarian cyst last yr when i was pregnant with ds and the pregnancy hormones made it grow til it was 9cm x 9cm. the gp dismissed my complaints of pain but my midwife recognised the signs straight away (3weeks after i'd 1st bee to GP) and i was taken into hospital.

i had to have my ovary removed but the cyst had twisted my fallopian tube and that had to be removed as well. thanks to the fantastic care of wishaw general, my baby survived (was 9+3 when had operation).

as julezboo says, dont panic just trust your body.

btw - am already pregnant again with #2 and ds is only 18weeks so despite cysts on remaining ovary i have still conceived.

Not sure if it is the same thing but I think the foetus all live off cysts until the placenta is formed? I
had one on a scan and she said it was nothing to worry about.

from what i understand there are different types of cysts. simple cysts that form after some ovulations and chocolate cysts - where the ovulation site bleeds. the foetus lives off an eggs sac where the ovary ovulated called the corpus luteum (going back to my uni physiology days)

i had/have chocolate cysts but one became a dermoid cyst due to the pregnancy hormones ( the type where tissue grows and it can eventually contain hair, skin and teeth) i have always had pain during ovulation (now i know its due to the bleeding).

aparently it is common to have simple cysts but other types CAN and i stress only can not will, cause problems. All i will say is if you are in pain, get it double checked or go to your EPAU unit for more scans.

meant to say - hope this helps. when i had this last february i couldnt find anything about ovarian cysts and pregnancy and felt really alone esp as i had to have major surgery whilst being pregnant.

i have now found out it is more common but still no-one really posts about it on any forum

YIkes, that's awful Kaa It's a normal cyst (forgot what she called it now) but it was on the larger side (not massive - 4-5cm? @ 10 weeks) , I had a small one last time but I couldn't feel it like this one. I will definatly ring MW tomorrow about it to be on the safe side, although I think if it was twisting an ovary or anything I would be in alot more pain...

ladyofwaffle - just get them to check it out. sure everything will be fine but if you are in any pain.... my gp kept telling me pain in pregnancy was normal but if it was that normal no-one would have more than one baby! thankfully this time round i'm fine.

the good news is that despite the consultant telling me my chances of ever conceiving again were zilch, i'm now 10weeks gone with #2 and ds is only 18 weeks old every cloud and all that!
