Progesterone and congenital anomalies

Hi all,

I’m just looking for some advice on progesterone prior to an appointment with my GP. I went for an early scan today with EPU and was told I had a subchorionic hematoma at 7 weeks. I had a spontaneous MC last July and I think that’s why I’ve been prescribed the progesterone from EPU (midwife wasn’t too clear when I asked why).
So I read through the leaflet on how to use and it says there was a possible link to congenital anomalies and excessive progesterone. I’ve previously had 2 TFMR at 12 weeks due to severe foetal abnormalities and so this was a huge red flag for me. After some research online, I’ve found that the particular brand is not used at all during pregnancy in the US for this reason.
I also had a large hematoma when I was pregnant with both my sons, DS1 it was reabsorbed before 12 weeks and DS2 had a huge bleed at 11 weeks which resolved by 20 weeks.
My question is…should the possible benefits of progesterone be outweighing the potential side affects here? I know that progesterone is widely prescribed for ladies after multiple MCs and had lots of success, it’s just that in my particular case I’m more concerned about the foetal abnormality potential side affects.
I’m going to ask my GP for bloods next week to see what my actual levels of progesterone are and if they are below average then maybe I’ll reassess.
In the meantime would just really appreciate others’ opinions as I’ve not told anyone other than DH IRL!

Hello, I'm from the UK but I'm on progesterone as a pessary because I had a very short cervix. Not sure about the foetal abnormality potential side effects. It's worked very well for me so far and I was on it for a week before they check my cervix again, it went from 16mm to 31mm. I'm sure they've prescribed it to you to help because I see a lot of pregnant threads about it. Wishing you luck all the same <3

Hiya, I took progesterone (Cyclogest) vaginally all the way through my pregnancy until I was around 36 weeks. My little boy was absolutely fine 🙂
