Bleeding after internal ultrasound

Hi all,

After any stories from people who’ve experienced this, whether that’s positive or negative.

I had a transvaginal ultrasound yesterday as I have had 3 losses in a year. The scan showed a healthy baby with a heartbeat, measuring 7+4. I am approximately 8 weeks so the nurse said that this was positive. Up till then I had, had no bleeding at all. This morning I have woken up with quite a heavy, period like, bright red bleed. I had some vaginal cramps during the night but they seem to have stopped now. I also had a couple of very small clots.

I know deep down that this is the end and I am devastated but I just wondered if anybody else has had a similar situation to this and what the outcome was?

Thanks,

Jenny

I’m so sorry to read this. Did you bleed during the scan? I know sometimes your cervix can be irritated by this and cause bleeding. I am sending positive thoughts your way. Early pregnancy is so hard 💕

Hi @JLB234 i had so much bleeding at 7 weeks, i'd never seen that much blood even during my miscarriage.
I thought that's it, it's over but it wasn't, my baby was still there and i gave birth to her in October 🙏
Sending you positive vibes and hoping all is ok ❤ xx

Thanks so much to both of you. I don’t think I had any bleeding during the actual scan. I only saw blood this morning. I feel so sick and anxious. I’m not sure I can go through this again. Thank you so much for answering. I really appreciate it xx

@justcouldntthinkofausername Please don’t apologize. I am so appreciative that you’ve taken your time to wish me well. The blood seems to be getting lighter. Still not hopeful though. The hospital have just been in touch to offer me an appointment at 4:30 tomorrow so just a waiting game again until then xx

Hi @JLB234

How did this work out in the end, if you don't mind me asking?

I went for a scan at the EPU after some spotting over 3/4 days.
They said they could see the gestational sack and the yolk sack, but the embryo wasn't visible. They said I was more like 5.5 weeks rather than the 6 weeks I thought and that in the case like this where it's called "a pregnancy of uncertain viability" that about half the time they come back later and see a healthy baby and a heartbeat, and that the other half ends in miscarriage. I have to go back in 10 days for another scan.
However since coming home I've noticed bright red blood and some clots when I've wiped. I have a horrible feeling it's a miscarriage but am holding onto hope that sometimes other people may see clots in healthy pregnancies, or that perhaps it was the scan itself that has caused this?

I'm beside myself and the idea of waiting 10 days is unthinkable at the moment.

@fluffycauliflowers

I’m so sorry to hear that you’re going through this. Unfortunately, it wasn’t good news for me but I’ve had friends that have had bright red bleeding and clots in pregnancy and have been fine.

I originally absolutely believed it was caused by the internal scan but I had two in my most recent and only pregnancy and everything was fine. I honestly think that unfortunately if a miscarriage is going to happen it will and all the internal ultrasound does is speed up the process. I’m not saying that to be insensitive, I just don't want you to blame yourself like I did every time I miscarried, wondering if I shouldn’t have had the scan done. I’m thinking of you and really hope everything turns out ok. Take care xx

Thank you @JLB234. Been to the loo twice since and no blood or clots and nothing in my pad. I really hope it was a horrible flash in the pan but I don't want to set myself up for disappointment either. Will have to wait and see.

This happened to my friend post internal ultrasound. I would decline in the future OP and wait until they can scan you outwardly. Sorry for your loss

Hi all. Just to provide an update in case anyone finds this in future... I had a scan today 10 days after the first one. Internal again. They saw the baby and a heartbeat and dated me 5 days behind what I had down. I must ovulate late because my LMP date and conception date were def correct. Anyway, obviously a huge relief.
I've had brown and red spotting pretty much every day for 2 weeks and still today. So I guess some people just bleed. Fingers crossed things stay positive for the rest of the pregnancy 🤞🏻🤍
