Early spotting with period pain like discomfort

I recently had brown discharge, no pain, when I thought I was about 8 weeks gone, (LMP 24th Nov 07) Internal examination showed no problems, and they offered me a scan for reassurance. When i had the scan, it appeared that there was a sac present - no baby. Doctor told me to prepare myself for the worst - a silent miscarriage, and to return in a week for checkup. The other possibility being that it was a very early (5 week) pregnancy - this would actually tie in with when we had intercourse. On returning, the scan showed en embryo measuring 4.4mm which would date it at 6 weeks, but no heartbeat. So it had grown - but the doctor (a different one from the first) still told me she thought it was a silent miscarriage. So have to go back on Friday 8th Feb for another scan. Now I have had some period pain like symptoms but no fresh blood, but am feeling quite sick in the days. Any advice please as doctors are convinced my dates are wrong (they are not) and that I have lost it. Can it grow if it has died?? Thanks.

i wouldn't have thought so, i think its wise to prepare yourself for the worst, but it is entirely possible that you ov'd very late. when did you get your bfp though?

Ruthbkr · 04/02/2008 18:50

Sorry whats bfp? New to all this!

its your positive pregnancy test. i was 2w out with my dates from lmp with ds and at my first scan i thought i was 7w but i was actually 5

Ruthbkr · 04/02/2008 19:03

Got it! Positive was on 28th Dec, which was a couple of day after I was due. Thats when we assumed 5 weeks gone, but could have been 1 week only. I am positive we only had sex the once in Dec, which was a week before the test. Which I know sounds unlikely but have only just come off the pill so irregular-ish periods. I know tests are really sensitive these days too.

Any advice would be very much appreciated, I am first time mum, and my partners father passed away last week - the stress levels in this house are ridiculous x

Can't offer much advice, Ruth, but I do know what it's like to wait for a critical scan. I'm so sorry about your partner's father - what a tough time you're having. Try to keep yourself busy and active until Friday - eat well and get as much sleep as you can. If the worst does happen you will get great support here. Fingers crossed.

PS 6 weeks is quite early to see a heartbeat...

Hi there

I had a similar thing, They generally wait until baby is measuring 6mm without heartbeat before they day its officially over. Unofortunetly I was measuring 7 weeks by the preg sac when baby was measuring 6mm. I had to have a D&C, my HCG levels werent rising as they should so we knew it was over.

Did they do HCG levels tfor you ? If so what was they if you dont mind me asking?

Thanks everyone really grateful for you all taking the time to message me. Doctors didnt mention the HCG levels, so can't give you info sorry Julezboo. I read that 6 weeks could be still early to see a heartbeat, and the fact that it grew properly between week 5 and 6 was reassuring, even though the Doc confused me saying it could still grow even if it had died (strange right?) I will keep you posted. Thanks again all x

Ruth i would ask them to do HCG levels, that will give you a right answer to wether preg is moving on or not, they should be doubling on average every 48 hours x

Ruthbkr · 05/02/2008 17:52

I will do that thanks. My cramps have gone but still have the brown discharge. Also was bit sicky earlier - could this be a good sign?

Oh, I hope so, Ruth, but I've really no idea. Fingers crossed, anyway.

Hey, had scan this morning but whatever was there has stopped growing so have unfortunatley experienced a silent miscarriage. The staff at the hospital were brilliant today though, taking lots of time with me. I am coming to terms with the fact that it just wasn't meant to be this time, and once it is all over we can start trying again. Thakns for all your messages of support, Ruth x

Im sorry to hear you are having a silent miscarriage.. I know how they feel seeing that I have 4 miscarriages myself.

Regarding the brown spotting and the lack of period, I had 5 days of brown light spotting when it should have been my period and so far Im experiencing -ve pg tests. I have had brown spotting on Honeymoon when I 'ovulated' so I would have been fairly confidenet that I would be PG now though like previous post said.. some ladies don't get their +ve tests until many weeks later...

Hopefully the next time you conceive, it will be a sticky bean for you!

Good luck and Im sorry for your loss.. hugs
