A friend of mine had some bleeding early in pregnancy and was taken to the early pregnancy unit where she was given a vaginal examination using and the doctor told her there was no bleeding.

Friend now feels really silly and embarassed and thinks she was either imagining it and has therefore gone really mad or the bleeding was from the back eg piles and again feels silly for think it was vaginal bleeding. Has anyone else been examined after a bleed and told there was no sign of bleeding. Is it just because the bleeding had eased by then

i think it would because she had stopped bleeding by the time of the examination. I had an internal scan at an EPU about a week or so after some bleeding, and was told that there was no bleeding - I think it just means that they can't see any bleeding at the time of the exam, not that there has never been any bleeding

The examination would have shown that there was no active bleeding at that time. It does not mean that there had been no bleeding before. Usually with a big bleed there tends to be old brown staining seen. It isn't uncommon for women to find the bleeding is actualy coming from piles they didn't know they had. Was sge scanned as well?

No not scanned, she was examined justa few hours after the bleeding stopped though so she feels really silly

I would have thought she should have had a scan. How many weeks is she?

milkybarkid · 03/12/2004 19:45

9 weeks

milkybarkid · 03/12/2004 19:45

9 weeks I had a sacan, same ything

milkybarkid · 03/12/2004 19:48

shouldnt an internal scan be done snowqueen at first they weren't going to bother with a scan for me cos they wouldnt see anything but an internal one would show something. also was told no blood on fingers but when I was scanned they said there had beena lot of bleeding and was likely to get more.

sorry, about spelling and that, rushing to do this

snowqueen · 03/12/2004 20:02

They said they will do a scan but she has to wait a week, shes not worried as her cervix is closed but just feels very silly and is afraid they think shes mad or making it up

milkybarkid, they never mentioned an internal scan just a normal scan but they did see as she is only just pregnant it might be nothing would show up, not sure how far along is she bit only found out last weeks she is pregnant.

mbk, so did you have bleeding and get told there wasnt any bleeding and then have to wait for a scan

I've bled in all my pregnancies-I've always been told when examined, that there is no blood-probably because they can't see any at that moment.I've had scans due to bleeding too & no one has ever seen any blood or been able to tell me where it's coming from or why.

Your poor friend certainly isn't going crazy-2 of my bleeds were like periods but I was still told that nothing could be seen.

FeastofStevenmom · 03/12/2004 20:16

snowqueen - if your friend does go for a scan next week, it is better if it is an internal one so early on, rather than an abdominal one as an internal one shows more this early on in PG. she should phone and check if she is unsure which type she is having; if she has an abdo one she will need a very full bladder, but if she has an internal one, she will need to empty her bladder before the scan.

mirage how soon after the bleeding were you examined. Had the bleeding stopped several hours before the examination

Hi snowqueen-this time around I was scanned & examined about 12 hours after the bleeding started & it had tailed off to brown discharge by then.I was told that they couldn't see any blood.

With dd,it was 4 days later by the time I was scanned & they didn't examine me at all, the bleeding was like the last few days of a period by then & no cause for it could be seen on the scan.I still don't know what caused it to this day.It happened again a few weeks later (at about 12wks) & the hospital wouldn't scan me or examine me as they said that if I was m/cing I'd know about it,as there would be unbelievable amounts of blood.Tactful eh?

I hope your friend is ok.25% of women bleed during pregnancy & 75% will go on to have healthy babies. The odds are in her favour.
