Gestational diabetes- worried

hi everyone. I got diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 17 weeks. It’s likely I’m prediabetic. I’m diet controlled now until I see a consultant at least. I’m just so worried and guilty I’ve hurt my baby in the lead up to the diagnosis by not thinking about my diet. I had very bad sickness and all I hate was toast, potato and fast food. I feel so bad and spending my nights thinking something is wrong. I just wondered if anyone else has been in this situation? Thank you

I was diagnosed with it a few weeks ago. I was devastated at first, thinking I had brought it on because I have HG and just ate what I could keep down. I went to a ‘teach in’ on gestational diabetes at the hospital and the first thing they said was it’s due to hormones blocking the insulin, nothing we could have done. It’s not your fault. After I got over the initial shock I have found the diet easy to adjust to, although the festive period has been a struggle. Every advert on tv has been chocolate yumminess!

I still have some spikes, but these are mainly in a morning when I’m struggling with sickness (despite being nearly 32 weeks and being on medication the HG still impacts daily life). Im in discussion about metformin but I’m trying my best to avoid it if possible.

For me the growth scans have been really helpful. I can see she is exactly where she needs to be on the charts, so by me being aware and managing it she is growing as normal. I’m glad I found out when I did.

Focus on managing it as best you can, listen to the professionals and believe it when they say it’s not your fault. Enjoy your pregnancy, maintain a good diet and try not to worry too much (so much easier said than done). 🤰🏻❤️

PP is correct, it's hormonal. Blame your placenta. You know in good time, they will monitor you and your baby, try not to worry! I'm a GD veteran now from diet controlled to metformin and 6 insulin jabs a day. Heed the diet advice, get yourself on the GDUK Facebook page (twee but helpful) and you'll be great.
