12 Week Screening Result - Worried

Hi all, I had a call from the hospital today saying I'm at high risk (1 in 11) for baby having a genetical abnormality, however the nurse also asked if I have been taking any hormonal supplements as this can sometimes alter the results. I have been on progesterone since conception (IVF pregnancy) so I am holding onto hope my results have been affected by this and are therefore false positives...has anyone else had this and had a positive outcome?! I'm so nervous 😓 I am going to hospital tomorrow for the full blood test which will be more accurate but there is a 10 day wait for results. Any positive stories will be so appreciated x

I am so sorry OP. You have 10 in 11 chance of everything being okay and I hope further testing will reveal that this is the case for you ❤

Thank you 🙏 @usedtolovenaps

It probably is your hormones increasing the risk so please don’t worry too much. Have the full blood test and fingers crossed all will be fine. According to those figures you’ve more than 90% chance all is fine.

@Tin10 any update?

Tin10 · 17/09/2023 13:13

Hey - yes baby Amaia is here and is perfectly healthy and I have since been told by multiple health care professionals they see so many women's results affected if they have had fertility treatment or taken progesterone in early pregnancy. Keep hope 🩵

@Tin10 omg! I have been told I have a 1 in 16 risk, low papp a and High hcg, I did take 9 progesterone tablets at the beginning of my pregnancy to bring on a period as I didn't know I was pregnant...now I'm wondering if that's altered my results too! I'm so pleased all turned out okay with you xx

LavenderSweetPea · 17/09/2023 16:14

Is this a thing? My results weren't great at the 12 week scan due to low Papp a - id been prescribed progesterone since week 5 and been taken daily. No one mentioned this night affect the results...

As it was I had an NIPT and all was fine

Mummyo1 · 17/09/2023 16:16

@LavenderSweetPea I'm wondering this. I was taking mine to force a cycle as they went awol. Turns out I was pregnant and took 9 tablets in 3 days. So I'm really Intereested in this

Tin10 · 17/09/2023 18:56

Yep it is a thing! When I went back in for my full blood tests the screening midwife mentioned it to me and I then spoke with my friend who just so happens to be an OBGYN Consultant who reassured me and said the same thing. He works in Australia and actually said that in Australia they don't even do the standard 12 week testing we do here as it is notorious for giving so many false positives! That also really reassured me. The blood tests done at 12 weeks are assessing your placenta function (pappA etc) which then give the percentage of likelihood of the baby having any potential issues and that is why hormones like progesterone or any fertility treatment may lead to inaccurate results. Xx

@Tin10 do you think this is possible for me? I took 3 pills a day for 3 days over two months. (9 tablets normally taken 1 daily but I had one big hit) 1st lot was to force a period. Second was to do the same but we didn't know I was pregnant and already had the course x

Tin10 · 17/09/2023 19:17

I'm not sure - it could be, but what I would say is the number of false positives those tests give anyway should give you hope it will all be absolutely fine. I know it's easy to say now I'm through the other side but honestly stay positive xx

@Tin10 my nipt came back low! Such a relief. We find out what we're having in 2 weeks I'm now curious if it's a girl with my hcg so high xx
